For what reason did you start genealogy research?

I knew my grandfather was born in Co. Tyrone Northern Ireland but was confused as to why because his father was an American. After some research, poking around, and asking questions I began to put some of the puzzle together. There is still much mystery around why my great uncle, Francis James Kelly, who was left in Clogherny with his grandmother, Isabella Crawford Pauley (nee McKay). Also I wonder why did my great grandfather, James Francis Kelly, leave his wife with 3 babies in 1924. Why did he allow her to leave one in Ireland? There are pieces of the story missing and my grandfather was only 4 and was never told by his mother what happened. He was in and out of foster care up until age 10 when he moved back with his mother and was not treated the same as his half brothers by his stepfather.
