It sounds as if you are attempting to print a descendant chart. Once your chart is open, go to the Appearance Menu: Select Sizing Options - > Change "Generation Width". On my screen a value of 2.75" per generation makes the chart…

Dunlea - Dunley -

As I understand it ....Mr. William Dunlea, and his wife, Mary Foley, and their three sons, John, Michael, and William emigrated from Country Cork to the Massachusetts in 1861. They were stone workers, and settled in Rockport, Mass.John Dunlea (b 1838 or 1841) married Margaret Boyle (b 1840) in Boston, in 1865.Margaret Boyle is also from County Cork, and she also may have emigrated in 1861. I do not know if she emigrated with the Dunlea family, or not. Margaret is the daughter of Michael Boyle…See More

Your story highlights the biggest problem with Ancestry.com - they have made "genealogy research" as easy as a mouse click and unfortunately too many users (I won't call them genealogists) are taking advantage of it. The problem with…

Yes, I know what you are saying as I had to get inventive with my other books from Blurb. For my text I used Word and went the cut and paste route which was time-consuming but necessary. I also found that not all the photo templates in Blurb suited my purpose and used various apps including Paint.net for some page and cover layouts. Then there is the problem of paper too. As most of my book/s would be text then no point in using photo quality paper for the whole thing. I'd like a mix of both.

Also, I would prefer PDF format and Blurb has offered that option but at the moment you need to download their templates which uses Adobe InDesign to create your book. The Adobe software alone is $699 so that is definitely out. Blurb states they will soon be offering other desktop publishing templates but who know when that will be and at what cost?

I thought about doing what you are planning regarding documentary evidence but for the size of my family tree it is not practical. I have over 1,000+ people I am dealing with. You are also limited on the size of your books with Blurb and I preferred the premimum paper I used for my published ones and I'd need several volumes. So then you get down to a cost issue also. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on my project either. Also, I think the price of books using MyCanvas is way too much.

I do agree with you on Legacy reports but find that I do like some of them and the fact you can convert to PDF format. Also, I don't want my book/s to be just filled with a lot of names and numbers either. That could be very boring to a reader.

Also, I don't now what your plans are regarding the amount of books you want to print but I'll probably only do a few no matter what route I take. It will be interesting to see what others have to say on the subject. I like your your idea of using Open Office. If you go that route then what will you do about binding, covers, etc.?

Thanks for the input.

Hi Mike!

Glad to hear from you. I am a member of Ancestry.com and a long time ago I started to use their publishing service before this mycanvas. The old one I had no problems with but mycanvas was another story. I don't know if you have ever used it, you didn't say, but my experience was terrible. I think the problem lies with my computer not having enough RAM to support it although I have read that other people have the same problem with hangups and it's terrible slow. What I really intend to do is use my Legacy software to which I have downloaded my main family tree to and use their excellent PDF formatted reports and books that you can create. However, I still want to do a lot of my own writing and insert photos as well. I did investigate paper and thought about doing the printing myself and then having it bound. I just wanted to see what others had to say and I appreciate your input. Blurb is not really suitable for framily trees and gen reports but they did do a great job on text and photo books I had published. I will admit their software drove me crazy but then again I blame that on lack of decent RAM on my old computer. I found it too be extremely slow so I had to be patient indeed with it. Have you had anything published or are you just experimenting with Blurb?

Thanks again for the input!

Steph
