Jake Painter is probably the most famous from his days as a miller, blacksmith, but mostly gunsmith in Springfield. He custom made pistols and rifles that went out West. Some we stamped "Jake's Best" Wild Bill Cody used to come by his shop. Jake repaired rifles for the Union Army when it was there. He married the daughter of American Revolution soldier William Freeman. William is buried at the National Cemetery at Springfield.
