Kirsty, if a knowledge of HTML is the only thing holding you back from adopting a county, please go ahead and sign up. I will be happy to have you forward the technical instructions to me. After that, anytime you want to make an update or change,…
The search page for the Catholic Records states the following:
'Note: Some Catholic parish registers record forenames in Latin. The indexes available on this site include Latin to English translation and you need only enter the forename in…
Presumably any Latin names are indexed as per the original? I see for example 106 James Kennedys but only 6 Jacobus Kennedy etc. I might have expected more of the latter.
Scots Catholic birth records posted online for first time
Catholics around the world will be able to properly research their ancestral links to Scotland for the first time after hundreds of volumes of birth and baptisms records were added to a new…
I must admit that Ancestry's "others on page" thing has been very useful on occaision. Apart from turning up a set of parents in the same street once, it's helped me find a couple of other people with names posing…
You are a gem Lesley. I tried all the counties but didn't think to look for the lodger so many thanks for that. I will inform SP with great satisfaction.
It took a bit of fiddling - I couldn't find the Slaters either, and you should report to SP that they seem to be missing from the index. I also used the Ancestry "show others on the page" button to confirm that the page was missing…
Lesley, I have a little trouble with Scotland's People this week. Was looking for an Adam Slater on the 1851 census in Stow and got a negative result even though the transcript is on Ancestry and Freecen. I contacted SP and got a reply that…
Quoting Peter Jacobsen "has anyone heard of a place called Killilung Scotland in the period of 1595 AD " .
The spelling of names, whether people or places, before WW1 in Scotland was a fairly fluid thing - people wrote down what they…
Lesley, thank you so much for posting this information. I have been able to use Scotland's People with much success and this info is very helpful! Thanks!
No relation as far as I know. Mind you, I still haven't found Grand Uncle Henry Lindsay Robertson (vanished after the 1891 census), but it's one of the 10 most common names in Scotland....
Sorry!
Quoting Charles:
"I have no idea how to have to establish which is the right William"
You're in a bit of luck since you have 3 less usual forenames among the 4 potential parents. You'll need to make a lit of all the children…
Hi Lesley. I guess it's confusing and the length of my comment was an issue. My grandfather, Andrew John McDonald's place of birth on his marriage certificate stated Burntisland NSWales (Australia). When I couldn't find Burntisland in…
Quoting Jan:
"ANDREW JOHN MCDONALD, aged 25, born Burntisland NSWales, Australia married ANNIE MAY ASPLAND in 1915 at Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia. His father was JOHN MCDONALD, Engineer, deceased, mother NELLIE PRINGLE. Burntisland I…
Hi Lesley. I guess it's confusing and the length of my comment was an issue. My grandfather, Andrew John McDonald's place of birth on his marriage certificate stated Burntisland NSWales (Australia). When I couldn't find Burntisland in Australia, I was told it was in Scotland, that's when I stopped searching for him in Ireland. I am unable to comment on siblings for Andrew John as his only living son in Australia knows nothing of his father's family except that the name Pringle (as in Nellie Pringle on Andrew's marriage cert) rings a bell.
Thanks for adding your links Lesley, it doesn't really matter where. I enjoyed looking at your website and hope it will encourage others to do similar studies.
