An Interesting Day In Gettysburg - Australians

Australia  and the US Civil WarI work as a tour guide in Gettysburg for the Farnsworth House. One of the tours I do is a living history tour. We typically have at least one Australian on every tour. I wondered why the interest in the Civil War by Australians.  Now I know why. A lady on the tour last week told me there are three Civil War veterans buried in Adelaide. That got me researching and what I found is absolutely fascinating. Some of the soldiers from Australia were really Americans who…See More

An Interesting Day In Gettysburg

Yesterday was an absolutely beautiful day in Gettysburg. One of those days God gives Vermonters (where I used to live) to make up for days in mid-winter when it is 25 below with 2 feet of snow on the ground.I normally do Living History tours on Monday and Thursday mornings but I didn't hve a tour yesterday so I took Harry Pfantz' book about the first day's battle and headed to Cemetery Hill and the National Cemetery. I intended to read about the first dy's fighting whee the Confederates pushed…See More

The Wolford Connection - Correcting Some Errors

I knew this was bound to happen and I have to correct some errors. The first concerns the three Catherine Kremers or Kraemer. Philip Wolford was married to Catherine Kraemer and they lived in West Manheim Twp., York Co PA. Some of their children went to Centre Co. PA.  Her name is correct. I mentioned that their son John was married to a Catherine Kremer. That is not correct. He was married to Catherine FUHRMAN of York Co PA. Her dates are however correct. Their son John was married to…

The Wolford Connection - Philip Wohlford's will ( Clinton Co PA )

The following is from the will of Philip Wohlford, son of the previous  Philip who moved over the mountain to Sugar Valley in Clinton Co PA where he lived outside Loganton. He and his wife are buried in the cemetery behind what had been the Lutheran Church. Loganton suffered a disastrous fire in 1917 and half of the town was destroyed including the original Lutheran Church. A bank occupies that spot today. The Lutheran Church rebuilt caty cornered across the intersection from the original…

The Wolford Connection - Philip Wohlford's Will (Centre Co PA)

Like John Wohlford or Wohlfart's will this will is just simply a list of his children and where they lived. Philip's will is dated 28 Nov 1842. Some of his children moved west and those are identified by where they lived. Philip moved over the mountain to Sugar Valley.

List of Heirs:

Susan m. Frederick Friedly lived in Stephenson Co. IL

Jacob

Philip m. Sophia Snook and lived in the Loganton, Clinton Co. PA area commonly referred to as the Sugar…

The Wolford Connection - John Wohlfart Sr's Will (Centre Co PA)

This is the John Wolford who I posted about before Philip. Spelling should have been Wohlford or Wohlfart.

Any of you who followed the Jerry Sandusky trial last week, caught glimpses of the beautiful courthouse where the trial was held in Bellefont PA. That is the same courthouse where brothers John and Philip filed their wills. I believe the older wills are now in the hands of the historical society.

John's children began the migration of Wohlfords. Kleckners and Snooks from…

Hi, Jim ... Thanks for your inquiry re: my Wheeler, Perry, and Colby lines, and a possible Avery line.

Your Wheeler and Perry lines do not match up with mine since my Wheeler line is from Albany, New York and my Perry line is rather short and is from New York.  Prior to New York I have Joseph, Sr. (1773-1841) and Joseph, Jr., but I do not know where they were located.

I have but one Avery, Eliza Avery (1838-1893) who married Elias Brown (1817-1887).

My Colby line is from Amesbury, MA and, prior to that, from Horbling, Lincolnshire, England.  If you have not been in contact with Ronald Colby already, I suggest you contact him   His website is located at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~colby/ which also gives his contact information.  He is a wealth of knowledge on the Colby line and I feel sure he would be most interested in seeing George Colby's set of journals.

Hi Jim

Thank you for your offer.

Do you have any images for a Rose Davis Alexander? She died May 1909 in Lisbon. Her husband was Melford Alexander. Rose would be the sister of my 3 x greatgrandfather Thomas who left Southampton, England, in 1870 and settled in Quebec's Eastern Townships. Their brother Arthur and Frederick immigrated. I believe Arthur moved to the States.

My email address is davisbennis@gmail.com

Jim, We believe my G-Grandfather, John McGinty was in the Civil War, but not sure. My father use to say my grandfather told him John McGinty & a brother worked on the levees, but not sure. We can not find any information on him, just his marriage to Mary Barker, can not find any information on her.Where do you work & would they have any names or info across from where you work? Happy New Year

Hello Jim, My Avery ancestors were from Herstmonceaux, Sussex.  The first Avery was Ann Avery who married Richard Eastland in 1722 at Etchingham, Sussex.  I can trace the line to Edward Avery born 1596 at Warbleton, Sussex.  Rhis is farther back than your family- but maybe there is a connection.

Hi Jim,

In response to your questions about my Raudebaughs: They were in Berks, Pa then moved to Juniata in the early 1830s.  They arrived in Wayne, Ohio in 1838.  I do not believe they are connected with your Raudebaughs, as none of the names in your list are familiar.  It is possible that there is a connection farther back in the mid-1700s but I don't know it.  As for the Native American connection, while many of us have stories of a inner-marriage, my DNA shows strictly European, which was quite disillusioning considering our family legends.  BUT I recently saw a show on the History channel that the Cherokees actually have European DNA, different from other Native Americans.  So all of us who thought we were Cherokees, may in reality have that connection after all!  So much  to learn.  Sorry I haven't been much help on your question.

Hi Jim,

Regarding my Radabaughs, my 5th Great Grandmother Elizabeth Radabaugh Powell was born in Berks Co. Pennsylvania in 1787.    They moved to Fairfield County, Ohio.  Her parents were John and Barbara (Werner) Radabaugh.    I'm sorry I can't be of further assistance.   -Tom
