For what reason did you start genealogy research?

I have been trying to find any details of my grandfather george cruse, born 1897, who then travelled to south africa in c1926 and then to India in 1936 (Calcutta). I have gaps in the cruse family line, but do know that there was a (James?) cruse who married a georgina (Page?) in the 18's.
