Valentine "Valcour" LeCour

Researching Valentine "Valcour" LeCour(t) from Natchitoches, Louisiana.  Can't figure out who his parents are.  He and Parthenia Sims moved to Houston,TX. area to live around 1860.  He is found on the census as Valentine LeCour states that his parents were born in France but I know this to be an error and wonder if Valentine is an error also.  1870 Census they are still in the Houston area but his name is Valcour.  This is the name that the family used to refer to him.  It is also on his deat

US Deaths in the Social Security Gap

Hello all,

Would anyone like to share any tricks for finding US deaths that happened during the Social Security gap (after the administration had begun, but before too many people were using it for retiree benefits)?  I have numerous people in my tree from that time period whose deaths I have never located, but I will share one in particular as an example:

Lillian "Lilly" Steel was born on 26 Aug 1873 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska, USA.   As far as I've yet found, she continued…

Happy New Years Gene,
I was wondering if you had the chance to look for the Death Certificate Repository yet and I was on Family Search again and typed in G.B. Bryant and there is another one on there with an estamated b. of 1912 and married to a Lucia Brinkers of Brinkley Arkansas, now is this a possibilty that this could be my father and his first wife.

Thanks

I see I am posted as being from Sabinas Hidalgo N.L. Mexico. That is incorrect. I am searching a grt-grt-grandmother that I think she comes from there, actually her daughter came from Sabinas, Hidalgo, N.L., Mexico...I am just guessing on her mother Petra Gomez. I am in Utah.
Thanks for all the hard work you do.

Gene...wow...I know math was never my strong point, but I don't know how I didn't make the connection btwn the christening record and the second marriage!

Just conjecture...but it could be that John Bacon (or any other sibling) was sent to other relatives by his stepmother. I have seen many cases of this in my family tree, as recently as my grandfather. But again, just specualtion.

I have long suspected a Kerr County, TX connection, and was working with a researcher there, but honestly, I was looking at the Josephine Beckmann-Bacon connection. There are many references to Kerrville in correspondence between John Bacon and his cousin, and my ggrandfather and other relatives.

It is also possible that subsequent ancestors are descended from second wife, Alice...and possibly had no knowledge of a previous marriage or children.

All very interesting...thank you!

Note to "maggie"

Hi Maggie:

At 7:21pm on August 29, 2009, you commented, "…who are your Butler?" I tried to comment back; will post a short comment here.

I am a direct descendant of John Butler (1745-1830). Prior to the Revolutionary War, John emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania; he served in the military most of his adult life. His final discharge occurred at Detroit (Hull's Surrender). John died at William's County, Ohio, leaving widow, "Lena." The SAR erected a memorial gravesite in John's honor at Florida, Ohio, in the late 1990s.

Butler, _The Butler Family in America_, 1909, was written about this particular Butler line. The work mentions John and John's father, James Butler. John Butler's siblings were Thomas Butler (1740-1832), William Butler (1753-1839), Jane (Butler) Mahan (1747-c1830), and Sarah Butler (1749-).

John Butler's uncle, Thomas Butler, emigrated with family to Pennsylvania. Thomas was the father of the men some refer to as, "The fighting Butlers." Of Thomas' sons, Lafayette is reported to have once said [paraphrased], "If I wanted a thing done well, I wanted a Butler to do it." Among the sons was Maj. Gen. Richard Butler (1743-1792) who died at St. Clair’s Defeat, near Fort Recovery.

Many placenames in the United States honor various members of this Butler line.

I descend of John Butler (1745-1830) by his dau., Asenath (Butler) (Preston) Thomas. Working from the Butler text mentioned and other histories, I've developed several reports. Some deal with peerage issues, others report on the effort to identify John's sons. Perhaps one day there will be an open Butler group on GW where some of the issues can be explored further.

References available on request. Hope this helps. -GJ
