I am a History (US and African American Studies) major at Kean University in New Jersey.I am completely fascinated by the colonial period of our history and decided to start researching the family histories of African American slaves that played a major role in US history.
I am currently working on a slave family that was owned by George and Martha Washington and during the process have become addicted to genealogy.
William "Billy" Lee (owned by GW) - outright freed in GW's will
Frank Lee (Billy's Brother) (owned by GW) - freed by Martha in 1801
married to Lucy - cook (a dower slave of the Custis family, Martha's first husband)
they had 4 children - Phil, Mike, Patty and Burwell
I am trying to find out what happened with Lucy and the children when Martha died (because they were still slaves) I believe she was "given" to George Washington Parked Custis.
