For what reason did you start genealogy research?

To research family history before my grandparents, their dates of arrival, place of birth, their parents names, etc.
Any documentation from Poland is in Polish (which I can't speak or read) or in Russia during the occupation. And many records were destroyed in WWI & WWII.
