Fred C. Day said… Christina,
I have ties to the Carolinas, and possibly Virginia. My earliest known ancestor on my direct paternal line is Thomas Day of Buffalo Cove, NC. It is rumored that he came from Virvinia, but this is unsubstantiated. Thomas was born approximately between 1735 and 1745, and he died in North Carolina. My Y-DNA tests to 111 markers place me in a the new MAV11 Clade within haplogroup I1, along with 5 or six other individuals who appear to be related. My closest Y-DNA matches aside from a first cousin who also tested are in Finland and Norway. I did not match anyone named Day aside from my cousin, so I do not know the original name of my family. My closest DNA match in Finland was someone named Grims, and his earliest known paternal ancestor was names Johann Seger. I believe my line has ties to Germany, Scandinavia, and Finland. Many Scandinavians and Finns have ties to Germany. I have a hunch that my earliest ancestor could have been an indentured servant who may have escaped and went to North Carolina, which was sparsely populated. My Geno 2.0 test estimated that I also have approximately 3% Native American, and my paternal line is known to have mixed with Cherokee.
My direct maternal line which places me in haplogroup K1a4a1a. I do not know the origin of that line. My maternal grandfather was a Prussian immigrant from what is now modern day Lithuania. This also has no bearing on my direct maternal line, but overall I estimate I am at least half German ethnicity.
I doubt any of this answers your questions, but I am throwing the information out because I have similar questions.
Thanks.
Fred
