Barbara, I was wrong. I spelled Welsh, and should be Welch, like the grape. lol That still may be from Walsh, just different spelling.

I would guess that the surname was originally Walsh, and the spelling was changed to match the pronunciation. In some areas of Ireland, Walsh is still pronounced Welsh.
