I was wondering if your Szabos have any connection to the Mertes family who emigrated from what was then Hungary but has bounced around between Czech and Romanian control as well as Austrian.
My great-great-grandparents had a daughter, Catherine Mertes, who had a daughter named Mary with a man named Albert Szabo in Buffalo, NY or Hungary sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s. We don't know if Albert and Catherine were ever married, but Catherine's parents, Karl and Mary Mertes, wound up adopting Mary sometime in the early 1900s and she was known as Mary Mertes by the time of the 1920 census of the area. She's not in my direct line, as I'm actually descended from Catherine's brother Joseph, but I am very curious to learn what I can about this mysterious relationship.

Thanks for the response, Marianne! Szabo is an unusual enough name that I figured it was worth asking.
