I worked for the Archdiocese of Chicago Archives for 25 years and processed almost all the orphanage requests in that time. I was laid off in 2011 but still keep in contact with my friends in the archives. I heard that, due to the staff cuts (a full time staff of 11 was cut down to 5 over the last 18 months), the archives will no longer process requests for orphanage records. They will release sacramental records, school records, and medical records, and synopsises of the files. They will no longer photocopy the entire file for release. It took a while to produce these records and with one archivist doing the jobs of four, she just does't have the time. They will also stop providing genealogical research by request. They will provide the record (sacramental and school) if the requestor can provide the relevant info (parish, names, dates). Please be kind to the archives staff. This is not a situation of their making.
