I am researching the Bastin/Bastian and Jagger families from Jo Daviess County-Apple River and Thomson townships. I am not aware that my names are connected to the Galena Bastians, but I could be in error. What I am sure of, is that in 1851, my ancestor Mariah Bastin was born in Scales Mound, then her father John and mother Ann had a farm in Thomson, Illinois. The family originated from Yorkshire, England. Maria eventually came to Utah and married Jonathan Cyrus Harrington in 1882. There is a gap following the 1860 census until 1882 that involves children, and I am searching for any clues. I doo have other info surrounding this family to share if I can help anyone.

I have been trying to find my maternal gr gr grandparents, who lived in the Chicago region in mid 1800's. My gr gr grandfather immigrated to US around 1850 from Limerick Cty, Ireland - he was Steven O'Shaughnessy - and married a Nancy O'Conner (this is from family records). One of his daughters, Elizabeth Ann, married John William Geiger (fr om Ohio) (I think I found evidence of a marriage license in Chicago), He had a sister who married John McNamara and apparently immegrated about the same time. One of their sons was a Bishop McNamara.
I've been frustrated in my attempts to find out any thing further back about these families

I should also indicate I'm interested in the family and descendents of Washington Wilson, who arrived in Crawford County from N. Carolina in the mid-1800's.

I have been tracing my husband's ancestors from the farming communities in Venne, Northwest Germany, to Okawville and Venedy, Washington County, Illinois. If anyone is interested in family history in either of these areas, I have many families in my database. Our family friend in Venne recently published a detailed, documented history of the 19th century emigration from Venne to Illinois and Indiana, among other locations, called Venne to America. The book's chapter of over 2000 immigrants from Venne gives spouse, birth dates, destination, and immigration year. More information on the book on my blog.

I am a direct descendant of James and Nancy (Clark) McHenry through their son James who married Itha Jane Davis. So I am looking for information on both the McHenry and Davis lines. However, my main problem is the McHenry line as we have been unable to find any information on James and Nancy. James was born in Pennsylvania in 1801. Nancy was born in West Virginia in 1806. They were married in West Virginia and lived in Pennsylvania for a while. They moved to Ohio and then to Cass County Illinois . I can find no information on the ancestors of either one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Linda Ruth Billington Stewart

Hello, I am searching for my grandmother's family. She was born in Pope county in 1896 but I can't find a birth certificate. I think her mother died in childbirth because her father was a widow in the 1890 Census. I can't find a death certificate for her mother, either. Where else can I look? These are the names I's researching:

    Borthick

    Ison

    Gillespie

    Doyle

  • Harold Henderson

Linda -- Where have you looked? Have you contacted the Illinois Regional Archives Depository at Southern Illinois University? -- Harold, midwestroots.net
  • Cheryl Rothwell

There may not be a birth certificate. The earliest birth certificates in Pope are 1877 but all counties can be spotty before 1916. Ditto on the death certificates.

Pope has an 1890 census? I assume you mean 1900.

  • Linda Ruth Billington Stewart

I checked the county and the Regional Archives.
  • Linda Ruth Billington Stewart

I checked Pope County and the Regional Archives.
  • Harold Henderson

Cheryl's point is well taken. If Pope County cemetery and newspaper records have also failed to provide a death certificate substitute, you might want to check adjacent counties' birth and death records. If the obvious records don't appear there either, then you may need to research indirectly -- for instance, by studying your grandmother's siblings and potential siblings or cousins with her maiden name in the area. Plenty of families have been proven without the benefit of a piece of paper that identifies them in so many words. -- Harold

    Earliest Records in Illinois Courthouses

Please note that birth and death records were not absolutely mandatory until 1916 so having an earlier record doesn't mean a complete record. I have found [not in a scientific study] that the summer records are more likely to exist.

    Hi,

I am researching my great great grandfather.  Joseph Vincent and his wife Sarah "Sally".  He was born in Macomb, McDonough and it looks like Sarah was also born in Illinois... just not sure where yet.  And they lived in Peoria for quite some time.  I've been reading the comments and it looks like there is some great sites that I haven't checked out yet.  Thank you for the hints :-)

For anyone researching Tazewell County, I recommend the genweb site: http://tazewell.genwebsite.org/

This is one of the best genweb sites I have ever seen.  I had not been there for a while, because I am running out of things to research in Tazewell County after 30 years.  The web master has done an excellent job, and there is a lot of valuable information posted there. Good searching!

They were married in Martinsville, Clark County, Illinois. (20 Feb. 1837)

Julia - born in Ohio 30 Aug,1820 and died - Clark Co., IL 10 Aug 1855

Ira - born 6 Oct 1805 in NY and died - Clark Co., IL 3 Dec 1880

I do not have any information on Julia's mother or her father other than his possible name, Joseph MARTIN

Nor do I have information on Ira B Rose's parents

Any leads would be helpful.  Thanks in advance!

I'm looking for information on the Charles SUTTON and Margaret McCormick family (they are my brick wall).  This is what know:  Charles SUTTON died  between 1886-1887 in Henderson County, Illinois and Margaret McCORMICK died sometime after that.  They had the following children: Florence M. b. abt. 1875, Emma E. b. abt. 1876, Harry Clinton b. 30 January 1877(my great grandfather), Charles R. b. 25 April 1879, Minnie Bell b. 25 February 1882, Stella Maude b. 01 April 1884. In 1887 Margaret took the three(3) younger children to the Woodland Home for Orphans and Friendless in Quincy, Illinois and stated that she was a widow and that the three (3) older children had found homes.  And that she was in failing health. I learn about the Woodland Home on Friday but beyond that nothing.   I hope someone can help, it is driving me crazy.
