I am a family history researcher whose specialty is southwestern Pennsylvania history and genealogies covering the counties of Washington, Greene, Fayette, Westmoreland and southern Allegheny from pre-Revolutionary War through the early 1900s. Also coming from a family of coal miners, I have an great interest in the coal history and mining families of this area.

My husband's families are Jamison, Haught, and Roberts and King from Waynesburg, Greene, PA! When I have time this evening I'll leave the details here.
  • Teresa Dahlgren

If anyone needs help in the Western Pennsylvania area, I can vouch for Pam Nixon's research - she found me loads of information on the Munn family of Washington County. I highly recommend her.

I'd welcome contacts from anyone researching Munn, Montgomery, McCollough, Gamble, Heckathorn, Swaney, or Inghram families in Washington and Beaver counties.

Hi, I am not from PA but lived there several years with my husbands family in Butler County. I am looking for information on my children's gr-grandparents. I know that they were married in PA and without digging out the paper it was around 1918 in Westmoreland (I think). The names are Andjew (Andrew) Pikun(Pikum) and Veronia Urmanevich (sp). What I am trying to find is where they are buried. I was told that Andrew was buried in Lower Burrell at Greenwood Memorial Park, but they have no record there. At least the cemetery says they have no record of it. After his death Veronia remarried a McCriski (sp) and I was also told she was buried there too. Any help would be appreciated.

I became interested in genealogy about three years ago and began tracing my mother's side - one of these days I will start documenting my father's.

The little that I know (or suspect) has his line starting in Ireland with Alexander McKinstry about 1610. Alexander and Sarah Lee had a son, Ezekiel who wed Rosina Chapman and their son was Alexander who wed Elizabeth Clarke Thompson. Their son Alexander emigrated to the US and wed Mary Samuels in Bucks County in 1731. Their son (yea another Alexander) wed Sarah Huston in 1764 and settled around Mifflin. They had another Alexander but my interest is in the next son, William who wed Elizabeth Ross in Mifflin County in 1793. Their first son was James Ross (second was Alexander) who wed Sarah Jackson in Armstrong County in 1819. It took them until child nine, but their son Alexander, wed Harriet Stivenson in Allegheny County in 1864 and their son, James Sylvester McKinstry wed Mary Ann Clarkson in Pittsburgh in 1902. These were my grandparents.

    Now to prove all that!

  • Kathleen Terry Billingsley

    Hi everyone,
Have hit a brick wall with my 2nd gr grandfather, Charles F. Terry, b in NY approx 1820, married Margaret Jane Fullerton, from Cambridge Springs, Crawford County, Pa. They lived in Franklinville, Cattaraugus County, NY, with 3 of their children, Thomas, Charles and Margaret according to 1850 census. By 1853, according to tax records, they had moved to Cambridge Springs, Pa, where they stayed until their death. They had three more children: Mary, George and Herbert.

Children of Charles and Margaret Jane (known as Jane) and their b. and d. dates are as follows:
    Thomas J. Terry b. 1842 in Pa; d. 1879 in Cambridge Springs, Pa;
married Elizabeth J. Curtis, b. 1845 in Pa, d. 29 May 1908 Cambridge Springs, Pa.
2nd child of Charles F. and Margaret Jane Terry: Charles W. Terry (my 1st great grandfather). Charles b. about 1848 in NY, d. 19 Oct 1888 in Buffalo, NY. Married Harriet Rodgers, b. 21 Mar 1853, Hayfield Twp, Crawford County, Pa.; d. 27 Feb. 1924, Meadville, Pa. Children of Charles and Harriet: Richard Abner Terry (my grandfather) and Donna E. Terry.
3rd child of Charles F. and Margaret Jane Terry: Margaret E. Terry, b. 13 Sep 1849 in NY; d. 7 Jun 1919, Meadville, Pa; married Vincent F. Maxwell, b. 1844 in Pa.; d.4 May 1921. Spent most of their married life in Clymer, Chautauqua County, NY.
    4th child of Charles F. and Margaret Jane Terry: Mary M. Terry, b. 30 May 1853; d. b/n 1900 & 1910 in Jamestown, NY; married Abner Smiley, b. 1848, Busti, NY, d. 28 Jul 1940, Jamestown, NY.
5th child of Charles F. and Margaret Jane Terry: George W. Terry, b. 24 Jul 1855, Pa; d. 30 Oct 1930, Clymer, NY; married Phoebe Rebecca Card, b. 17 May 1854, Harmony, NY; d. 10 May 1910, Clymer, NY.
    6th child of Charles F. and Margaret Jane Terry: Herbert Terry, b. 1860, Pa. d. b/n 1860 and 1870.
Question: Does anyone know the parents of Charles F. (possibly Frank) Terry who was born in NY (abt 1820) and died in Cambridge Springs, Pa., 11 Mar 1884?
    Thanks a lot,
    Kathleen

Fayette Co., PA - I am looking for the parents of Thomas Hatfield. Thomas was born about 1800 in Fayette Co. He married about 1825 Elizabeth (her last maiden name maybe Henry) and in 1830 they are in Menallen Twp, Fayette Co. By 1835 they are in Clinton Co., Iowa. They have the following children Mary Jane, William G., Sarah F., Elizabeth, and Thomas Alfred. Elizabeth died 28 Dec 1870 I believe in Clinton County, Iowa. About 1871 Thomas married a second time to Sarah Margaret Hall and had one more son Christopher. Thomas died 29 Nov 1875 also in Clinton Co., Iowa. I would love to connect with anyone researching this family. Sue
  • Virginia Taylor

My maternal ancestors all settled in Westmoreland Co. I have most of the history on my Erdman/Ardman/Artman line but have hit a brick wall with my Dunlap line. I know that my gggrandfather, Robert Dunlap came from Ireland but do not where in Ireland nor his birth date. Also have not been able to pinpoint when he arrived in Pa. I do know that my great grandmother, Elizabeth, was born in 1826. Robert died in 1841. If there is anyone researching Dunlaps I would appreciate hearing from you.

For years I have been trying to find my ggg grandparents- Do not have much info. Oscar William Harvey born 20 Oct 1852 in Crawford, PA. His father- JACKSON HARVEY was believed to have entered the war in PA with his brother and never returned. His wife, Myra, was believed to have died early. Believe Oscar was raised by an older brother, Joseph. They are found in Randolph, Cattaraugus, NY.
  • Nancy Ulmer

I am researching the family name of Joseph Baldwin b. abt 1769 in Fayette Co. married Sarah (I think Clark). They moved to Ohio then to Indiana where they died.
Their children were: Elias Clark, Jane, Ann, Elizabeth, Susan,Catherrine & Mary. The info I have all of the children were born in Brownsville Fayette Co. except for Mary who was born in Indiana. I have conflicting information about when Joseph and Sarah went to Ohio, as there was a person who said they were born in Ohio. Any info would be a great help for me to get the correct info.
  • Ray Keltz

I am looking mainly for Westmoreland County, but also have a bunch of people in McKean County. I'm looking for Wolford, Keltz, Arnold, Wile. Anyone that may have the same names, let's see if we're related!
  • Nancy Foster

I am researching the McCLATCHEY clan - descendents of James McCLATCHEY and his wife Jane. There were six children: Mary, b abt 1763, married Daniel KILLEN; Robert, b abt 1765, no known marriages, may have died young; James, b abt 1767, married three times; Nancy, b abt 1768, married Samuel ELDER; and twins Charles and Elizabeth, b in 1769; Charles married Elizabeth CRAWFORD and Elizabeth married James DONALDSON.

A few of these lines have been well-researched and others have next to nothing known about them. I am particularly interested in the eldest son of Charles and Elizabeth CRAWFORD McCLATCHEY, Samuel, born about 1791. He has been exceptionally slippery, appearing in various places--though never two at
the same time--with various wives; and quite a number of children who have proven equally elusive. Any help on any or all of these people would be greatly appreciated.
  • Judy Broleman

How can I find out information about a 1911 marriage in Greensburg between ANNA VOELKER of Greensburg and JOSEPH BROLEMAN from St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph (age 59) came to "collect" his 20 year old bride and they returned to St. Louis where the rest of Joseph's family lived.
  • Cammie Nussbaum

Where can I find birth records in Washington County 1828 - If any exist? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
  • Pam Nixon

Birth records at the county level were not required in Washington County until the late 1890s. Birth records for that early time period would only be possible to find in old church records if a church affiliation is known.
  • Cammie Nussbaum

Thanks Pam! This "Hall" line seemed to stay with the Lutheran Church - That early period, records may have belonged to the pastor? Pension application does not specfiy town, just county.
  • Pam Nixon

  • Judy Broleman

Thank you so much. Do you think the marriage record will contain the names of the bride's parents?

It should have the names of the parents for both the bride and groom. Make sure you request a copy of the actual license and the license application.
  • Bob Mooney-Pa

I am looking for help with people named George and Laura Hageman.
From what I know they lived in Pittsburgh during the late 1890's and had a daughter named Ruth in 1903.
Sometime around the time she was born they moved to Washington County. Midway or McDonald area.
Ruth ended up living with a family named McCarty around the age of 1.
Why I don't know. But from some info I have gotten she was an orphan by then.
I don't have much info on the Hagemans. I have a few census with a George on it but not sure if it's him. One is the 1900 from Pittsburgh showing his father as George and mother as Sarah. The other is a 1910 again city of Pittsburgh. But I don't think this is him. Someone HELP!!!!! LOL
  • Pam Nixon

    To Mooneysearch,
Do you have first names on the McCarty family? I live not far from McDonald so I might be able to find something for you.
  • Pam Nixon

    To Mooneysearch,
Did Ruth take the McCarty name or did she stay Hageman?
  • Bob Mooney-Pa

First off my grandmother didn't take the McCarty name.
The McCarty's first names are John and Anna (Lindsey) McCarty.
I have some info on them from a gr grandchild of theirs but she didn't know alot.

I have a transcription of a court petition asking for a guardian to be named for children of a deceased father.  The petition appears to have been filed in mid-1802 and states that it is Westmoreland county.  The records that the county holds may or may not inclued either this date or type of record.  I have written twice to the county asking if they have the document and they have not replied.  Anyone have luck communicating with them??

    Fred

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

I am looking for any type of record for a Jonathan Williams. Before 1804 in SW Pa.

He could have lived somewhere around Wheeling Creek. What possible forts would have been in the area? Are there land records for that area? I know there was the Pa Land Office in that time. But didn't find anything online except reference to the office. No actual records.

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

Marie...what other info on him do you have? DOB? Where in Fayette County did they live? His DOD?

The more info you can supply the easier it will be to help you.

  • Marie Long

Bob the only information I have is that he was born in 1774, I do not know where.

1830 census has him as living in German Township in Fayette County PA.My grandmother lists his wife's name as Margaret nothing else. I don't even know how many children they had or if he was a farmer or worked in the mines. I would like to find something about Robert Murray/Murry.
