Kathy McCain - research the regiment and develop a timeline for them.  They may have been consolidated with another regiment after he joined and his records may be with the later regiment.  If he died in the service & the married, there may be a pension in the state where the widow was living when she filed.  This would only apply to a Southern state.  Read any reports made by officers of the regiment in the Official Records for info on engagements they were in.  There were also Union regiments formed in LA.  Many men switched sides after 1863.  Good luck.

I have several ancestors that fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy.  I have been trying to find information on James (B) McCain from Washington Parish, LA.  He along with his brothers fought in LA 3rd Calvary Regiment.(Wingfield) per Fold 3:. https://www.fold3.com/image/64555963. I am trying to find where he died.  I have seen several statements but no actual record of where and how his death occurred. The records in Fold 3 are very limited. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Response to Robert Olson on the location of the 16th VA Calvary under JEB Stuart at Gettysburg: Go to the website HMdb.ORG and type in Gettysburg in the search box. When that page comes up scroll down a bit to see a reference to Stuart's movements and click on the section that will take you through the entire battle. The 16th is mentioned there. You also may want to try searching for the 16th under it's history.

HI from newby Joy.. several of my mother's Short/Short side family were in the Civil War from AL.  James Jefferson Short, Jr born Walker CO 1845 was injured in TN and mustered out. He married Malissa J Quinn and they & family moved to MS & Greenwood, Sebastian Co, ARK. Several of the family, Shorts were fatalities... at Shiloh, Pittsburgh Landing, & Gettysburg.  Others survived Anderson Quinn.  Ervin/Berry families too TN & MS.

Hello Jim,

My 3rd great grandfather and two of his brothers were at Gettysburg (maybe a little on the Late side). They were with the Virginia 16th Cavalry under JEB Stuart. After Lee's withdrawal they ended up at Monacacy where the two brothers were captured and ended up at Elmira POW Camp. Both died at the camp. My ggg grandfather never knew what happened to them after capture, he just knew they didn't come back. I found them in Woodlawn National Cemetery a few years ago. Their names were John C. and Floyd McDonald. I have never been to Gettysburg but if you know what areas the Virgina 16th Cav were at during Gettysburg I would be grateful for any info. Family legend has it that the 16th was covering some of the flank areas during the withdrawal. My ggg grandfather got separated from his brothers at Monacacy and the boys were captured near Frederick, Md one day apart. Thank you for any info.

My Gggrrandfather was John Thomas Alexander.He fought with Georga 8th batt co.BHe supposedly died 6-1-1864 No proof. Lived in Sonora Ga. in 1860.Does anyone know where I could find info about him.Or where he might be buried He died in Calhoun,Ga.

Jonathan Miller  was a Sergeant in Co. K 6th. regiment of PA .Cav.Vol. commanded by Captain Ellis - Line of duty Cold Harbor,Virginia in 1862.He was discharged October 17,1864 at Harpers Ferry,Virginia.

Joseph Miller  Corpl.  Co.K    Reg't  6  Vol.  PA Cav.  under Col. Rush  in Virginia.and Harpers Ferry,

Samuel Miller  1st. New York Vet.Cav. Co. G - 1 also Co.G. 23rd. Penna Militia.

served at Camp Loupe ,West Virginia. Chambersburg,PA

Giles B. Winder Private in Co.F 106th,PA Infantry ( Pension Papers ) Some of the writing is faded and hard to read.

Clara - saw your post about having Civil War ancestors. Did they fight at Gettysburg? I can shoot some pictures of their monuments if so. What units were they in? Jayne McCormick who founded this group, passed away in early December. Lord I miss her.

Looking for any info on Albert Dunlap/Dunlop...He was a Confederate surgeon...I think he was from TN...after the war he ended up in Ft. Smith, AR and then on to Winslow, AR...he was born about 1829...if anyone can find me some info please send it to me at winslow.museum@yahoo.com or post on here...thanks so much!
