Glad to be here I have a brick wall in SC and could use some tips on how to proceed. I have a brickwall with my G Grandmother. Ada Hilley. She was born abt 1880 in GA. I do not know her parents names. She married in 1908 to James Hilley in Elbert GA. They moved to Anderson county SC area, The last documentation I have on her was in the 1930 SC Census. She was in the state hospital and it listed her as Divorced. The next listing on her shows her as Ada Thompson Hilley (also Ada Hilley Tompson) mother of deceased. I can't find anything on her as to what happend to her, if she was married before she married my G Grandfather James. So I have looked under both Brown and Thompson to see if I could find her parents. As for after 1930 I can't find anything showing a marriage, death or anything in both SC and GA. Any suggestions or tips. SC is kinda hard to search in due to the the records being held in county Court house, you just have to figure out which county. Thanks.

J'Anette, there are many speculative reasons (family in that area, one of the two from that area, elopement, etc). But they all remain just that, speculation. You may or may not find out from family stories, journals, etc.

My family came from Charleston. Have a look at my website - www.grimke.co.uk. I'm going to be in Charleston the 2nd week in November and am looking for speaking engagements. Do you know of any groups who would be interested? I've done genealogical research especially on African American Draytons, using Census records, Freedmen's Bank Records, WW1 & WW11 Draft Cards as well as Civil War records. I'm also in touch with descendants of those who were slaves on the plantations. I'm also involved in a project called "Coming To The Table" - www,comingtothetable.org.
