Hello fellow researchers!  My name is Linda Hauley (nee Vodden) and I have been doing research since my early 20's but more recently on my maiden name as a one name study.  I have been in touch with many Vodden's over the past 12 years starting with Rootsweb and have made many connections.  Recently, I thought Facebook would be a place also to get in touch with the younger crowd and although most are not inclined to be interested, I've been able to establish friendships resulting in tying more of my Vodden lines together.  My passion is genealogy, what can I say? !!!!

Hi everyone, I have been doing my family history now for about 5 years.  I have started the Social Networking for Wise Genealogists this week to learn more about how the internet can help me.  I’m joining this group to hopefully interact with others and share ideas.

Eileen,

CONGRATS!!  I am sure that's a great feeling.

Pat,

How do you like the course through NGS?  Did you select the graded or nongraded?  If graded, how do you feel about their grading?  Meaning, are they serious.

I have been researching my family for about 20 years and the last year and half have been working on improving my skills. I took a couple of courses from NGS and am halfway through NGS Home Study and ProGen and I have taken my first course with NIGS. and while working on this I did get my first client and it is a good feeling getting that first payment.

Well done Eileen, it is a great feeling when the first payment comes in!

The last sentence should be:

"I highly recommend NIGS."

I had been researching my family for eleven years when I decided to get serious about improving my skillset. After researching all the educational opportunities, I selected NIGS and have not been disappointed. My skills improved with each class and just like any other school the classes become more difficult as you advance through the course.

I recenlty launched the startup of my own company, Old Bones Genealogy, and last week collected my first payment for my work as a professional genealogist.

I highly recommend NIGS and if oyu decide to go for certification,

That's why I was asking about the classes.  I am a certified coder, and althought you can take classes in coding and get a certificate from the school, that doesn't make you a certified coder, you have to pass a certification exam through a national association.  There are many companies that offer "training' but it really doesn't amount to anything.  I was politely trying to see how NIGS measured up.

PLCGS stands for Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies.  I would like to point out that there is a difference between getting a certificate and certification.  As Brenda says, getting the PLCGS with other experience helps ready you to apply for certification.  There are two independent entities that offer certification.  They are the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) and the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGEN).  Each of these certifying bodies have their own criteria for certification.
