There is a very good article about ‘autosomal’ DNA testing in the Dec. 2011, Family Tree Magazine. I found the articled helped me understand it better and there are links identified to other resources connected to this newer DNA test. The test is more expensive then basic DNA testing so not as many people have taken this test.

I have been researching the families of my four grandparents (Woodrow, Pullman, McMackon and McKever) for about 20 years.  The inevitable has happened, and the surname search has expanded to include others, such as Beamish, Swanton, Stone and Reycraft.  I am enrolled in the Social Media course and have found it useful as it has explained and demonstrated to me how social media websites can be productive for genealogy research.  Other than basic message boards and mailing lists, the various sites and techniques are new to this retired guy.

I am currently taking the Social Media course, my first with NIGS, but definitely not my last. I have been researching my family history and that of extended family for 20 years, and am hoping that some proper instruction will help me knock down some of those brick walls that have loomed up in front of me.

I am currently taking the Social Media Course.  I am an amateur genealogist with a passion for research.  I'm working towards becoming a certified genealogist.  I am retired (but still consulting)  and I can't think of any better way to make money than to combine income with something I'm passionate about.

Has anyone else had trouble getting in touch with NIGS lately? I've been emailing the past month and have yet to receive a response.

I have taken several courses with NIGS and continue to work slowly toward certification. This Social Media course has nudged, sometimes shoved me, toward using social media that has become instantly useful in doing my own research for family and their historical contexts.  As social media evolve I believe that I will expand my own explorations with "the new" in the belief that it will benefit me and my research.

Jamie Mayhem,

Congrats of completing enough course for your PLCGS. Irish genealogy is open and runing. Scottish genealogy has a roadblock and after 2 years they are still trying to get an instructor so students can at least receive a Basic Certificate in Scottish Records. I have completed 5 courses in Scottish records and I am waiting on the 6th to be offered. German genealogy is open I took one course. I have also received my Basic Certificate in Irish Records.

As you know researching can involve finding and accessing records not on the Internet. This becomes an issue with research in the UK, Ireland or Germany.

There are also elective course that have some good ideas. I think there are going to be some updates made to the English Record Courses as Kirsty Gray, chairperson of the Guild of One Name Studies, gets involved this fall. You can hold a couple of those electives for future course considerations.

I need some suggestions. I've finished all the required courses for my PLCGS in American research. I have 6 electives left.  My ancestry is German, English, Scottish, and Irish. All came to the US prior to 1800.  I've taken the English Civil Registrations but the class is for research after my families already left.  What suggestions do you have for classes on research specifically in England, Ireland, or Scotland prior to 1800.
