Writing Your Childhood Memories and Family Stories

My grandfather - a wonderful, charismatic, charming old gentleman - would regale us with family stories. A year before he passed (which was recently, on June 5th just past), I had audio taped him telling these same stories he had used to make us laugh throughout the years. These .mp3 files are invaluable to me now and I hope to use them to keep the stories going strong in the family by telling them to my niece (now 3) and the only child (yet) in the family. I also plan to write them down and share them; they should never die and by keeping them alive, I also keep a piece of the man I considered more a father than a grandfather forever.

I am very happy to have found a group like this. I have long dreamed of writing my families story and have just begun the journey of learning how to do that. I look forward to the learning and sharing experience of being a member of this group.

For my grandmother in law's 90th, I had her son and daughter collect some of the older pictures and I put together a scrap book for her. Had pictures from when she was married, all 3 of her kids (one had passed as an infant) and then her grand kids and great grand kids. This project took me over a year to do and was my favorite scrap book to date.

For her birthday, she had a surprise party and the talk of the party was that a majority of her grandkids had come out. She was in Jersey. That was until I gave her the scrap book. That became the focal point of her party. Going through all of her memories.

Plus, we got to look and see who looks like who in the family! I loved it.

Hi Emily What a great idea for a group! I know that as the oldest grandchild in my family, I had the benefit of hearing stories that my younger cousins did not and I've been working on getting them all together to share with our children and grandchildren.

Hi Emily,

Thanks for inviting me to your group. I look forward to learning more about sharing childhood memories and stories. I made my mother a journal jar for Christmas one year. She wrote a little about her college years, but in the last few years My sisters and I interview her and add to her notebook. I've kept a personal diary for the past several years as well as daytimers for maybe 10 years. I just can't throw them away.
