Hello David

The Wiltshire Wills website lists Wills and other documents relating to the Plasketts of Downton. Copies of these can be purchased from the Wiltshire Archives. These go back as far as the 17th Century. I see that some of them were yeoman farmers, so would have had some standing in the area. The website is at

Interestingly there are 4 documents of Plasketts from Great Bedwyn in north Wiltshire. It would be worth ordering copies of those as well, in case there is a link. Hope they help with your research

PLASKETT: I have been researching my family for over 50 years. I was born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada and when my grandfather was dying my relatives were discussing what to put in his obit - they had lost touch with the English relatives. My father was sure he was Welsh but I have traced the family to Portsmouth. I'm back to 1749. Now I seem to be trailing to Wiltshire but can find little. There is a familysearch record for William Plaskett, son of Samual and Mary, jun 30 1735 in Downton Wiltshire, but it has no reference since it was submitted by "an LDS church member". Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I seem to have Wiltshire links with some of the branches of my tree. I'll attempt to remember them below:
Chesterman - CHESTERMAN one name study ( lots of Chestermans in Wilts
(have not delved into them too much yet)). My direct link to
Wiltshire is via marriage into the HUGHES and SANSUM families
(Highworth area).
Biggs/Edwards - my maternal grandmothers family came from Stanton St
Bernard/Honeystreet area

Sorry I got confused. I sent a message to the group, confusing it with a discussion. I am a new member - forgive me.

My maternal 4x great-grandfather was born in Westbury in 1791; subsequent generations were born in either Westbury or Dilton Marsh until my grandather's birth in Monmouthshire in 1892. My paternal line came from Wellington, Somerset so I plan to go there as well. Other surnames connected to my Wiltshire line include: SCULL, DEACON, VEAL, and SAGE.

Hi everyone - I live in Florida, USA, and am a part-time professional genealogist. I am coming to the UK for research in 2 weeks and plan to spend time in Dilton Marsh, where my mother's family line originated (or at least go back to the late 1700s). I lived in Yorkshire in the 1960s but as a teenager, I was not that interested in family history. I hope to accomplish a lot during my two weeks of research (also going to Somerset, Wales, and Yorkshire).

The Hillman family were originally from around Westbury, Wiltshire. George Hillman and Elizabeth Harman and sons James & John plus their children immigrated to Upper Canada(Ontario) sometime between 1829-1831.

Welcome to the seven members who have joined since 1 September - what are your Wiltshire connections? Has anyone linked up yet?

My Wiltshire links are with the DOEL name found in the North Bradley area and WHITE in Maiden Bradley. Both these families moved to Southampton in Hampshire.
