Hail, Hales all, and happy tidings for the coming Christmas season--just reading recent posts and realized I haven't said anything in awhile.  I'm still up here in Chicago, occasionally trying to figure out who my Nicholas Hale-descended grandfather was.  All I know about him was that he was a red-haired man living in Chicago in 1928, that he supposedly was a newspaper reporter, and that he had a pet monkey!  Yes, that was all I knew of my paternal genetic gramps...LOL!...until I took the yDNA test and discovered my descent, through him, from Nicholas Hale.  However, "Red" may or may not have had the last name "Hale," so it's pretty hard to know where to begin my search up here.  I also took a genetic ethnicity background test, to see if I possibly had any African-American dna in my background from "Red," but this proved to be a negative--all northern Euro genes for me, so the theory of "Red" being possibly descended from an African-American descendant of Nicholas Hale who "passed" is also out the window.  I think my nearest Hale yDNA relative is still Michelle Stuart, and our MRCA is back about 12 generations, am I right, Michelle, which I figure is about 150-200 years ago...if anybody has any ideas, suggestions, or info that might help me in identifying "Red," I'd sure love to hear from you!  Take care--Jaime "Hale" Haas

Just wanted to share that I have FINALLY found the Emancipation record of my 4th GR Grandfather, Zack Cage!  He and another slave, Elijah, were emancipated by Elizabeth Hale Stephenson Cage in 1823 in Washington County, TN. Five years later, Elizabeth sold Zack a slave named Ben (possibly his brother) via her brother Joshua Hale of Giles County, Pulaski, TN.

I had always assumed that Elizabeth had emancipated Zack in her will (like countless other Hale family members) so I was very surprised and delighted to learn that she had, in fact, emancipated him of her own accord.

I'm not a descendant of Nicholas Hale but my 4th great grandfather, Zack Cage, was a slave owned by of his daughter Elizabeth Hale Stephenson Cage and her 2nd husband William Cage.  He was listed in William Cage's 1811 will as one of the 3 slaves he "got with" her and was willing back to her. He was also one of the 3 colored polls that were listed with her on the Washington Co. TN tax roll of 1819.

I am looking for any information on when Elizabeth might have died and/or Emancipated her slaves, as Zack was listed on the 1850 census as a free man living in Rutherford Co. TN.

I know that several of the Hale family members emancipated their slaves in their wills.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

In most of the records , this Elijah doesn't have any initial.  And, actually this is not my own family but that of a neighbor, Val Hale.  Do you have any info on this line?  Lou

Mary Louise, do you have the middle name or middle Initial for your James or Elijah?

I come from the Elijah Hale(Haile) and Massa line through the James Hale family.  I am trying to find Elijah's parents.  I am checking out Joab Hale and Lavinia Dill who moved from South Carolina to Smith County Tennesee between 1800 and 1805.  If anyone has any other info on this ancestral line, I would love to hear from them.

Seeking info on my gg grandfather (John Hale). He was possibly born 1808-1820 in one of these Viginia counties; Grayson, Washington, or Wythe. He is show in the 1850 census for Perry County, KY with his wife Sally (Sarha Fawbush, born about 1822 in Sullivan County, TN), and the 1860 census for Magoffin County, KY. His son William was born about1842 in Russel County, Virginia. Thanks for any help.

Since John sort of raised the issue, has any one else noticed that we seem to have had a lot of Y-DNA mutations for folks that can't be much more than 8 - 10 generations from one another? Just how high is the background radiation level in East Tennessee?

I also find it difficult to find a match. My closest dna match is a Burgess who's ancestor was an fathered by a Hale from Virginia.

I believe the DNA testing is the best way to qualify your line to the Nicholas II tree. But, it may be difficult to find the exact matches in the tree, as I am finding in my research.
