For starters, I'm trying to find out if Hampshire County, WV used to be Hampshire County, VA before the divide?
I have a Schumaker/Shoemaker/Shumaker line that has Hampshire county, VA ties. At one point in my life I lived in Hampshire County, WV, pre-genealogy days. I'm curious if they are one and the same now.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Troi,
To answer your question yes it was Va before 1863 and WV became a State.

Thank you so much, Ross!
Ok, now that I've gotten that answered, maybe that is the reason I felt so 'at home' during the 4 years I lived there. I have ancestors that lived in Hampshire County, I'm just trying to figure out which ones and when. Chances are that I am related to some of the Shoemaker's that I went to school with.
Hampshire County was formed Dec 13 of 1753 and is the oldest county in WV. It was formed from parts of Frederick and Augusta counties in Virginia. Morgan county WV used to be part of Hampshire as well. I have relatives from Hampshire Co. as well. My mother is from Morgan Co. which now borders Hampshire. Last name is Mcdonald and I am doing research as well in that county. So many Mcdonalds that I am stuck! What part of Hampshire Co did you live in?
I lived in between Romney & Paw Paw. Went to school with a Tim Mac/McDonald, but I think that's the only one I know...I'd have to check the yearbook & get back to you.
Those counties are all confusing. A lot of them are from other counties that split up throughout the whole history of Va.
I have that confusion with Hardy and Grant County. I can never remember where they came from! I think Usgenweb has it on the Hampshire county, WV site as to what county it came from.
