Introduction

Welcome to the Wales and Welsh Genealogy Group. This is a group focused on Welsh Genealogy and other topics related to genealogy in Wales (map). Welsh Genealogy is not for the faint of heart and can be extremely challenging. But, it is also one of the most interesting pursuits and hobbies that you can find.

If you're just getting started, the BBC has a wonderful section on their web site devoted to Family History in Wales. If you're looking for more detail about Welsh Genealogy, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a great Research Outline for the Country of Wales.

@Phillip Roderick... that does indeed make it tough... maybe someone else here will have an idea for additional resources that you could look at. Any takers?

Hi Chip
And here in lies the problem and my being sceptical.
My great grandmother would always brush aside questions about her mother Sarah. I have no clue what her sister was called.
So sad that my mother din't ask the kind of questions I asked when I was a kid.

@Phillip Roderick... just curious, but in an earlier comment you mentioned that Sarah had a sister in the US as well. Do you know when her sister was born? The only reason I ask is because I think it's a bit of a stretch to assume that John was her father based on the info you've provided so far. If you can find Sarah with her sister in the same census record, I think it would help you narrow down the list of potential fathers a bit better.

Hi Chip
Until a few years ago I had no idea where she was born all I knew was her name and her father's name. Someone kndly looked up the USA census of 1860 and claimed that there were only two Sarah Hughes born around 1856 in the USA nd only one had a father called John. This Sarah was born in Chicago.
The John on this census was born in Wales.

Thank you Chip, it maybe a little impertinent of me if that the right word, but how did you come by the name chip.

@Phillip Roderick... it sounds as if your question is more related to Sarah's US history. It's going to be really hard to help unless you have a better idea of where she lived in the US. Was her father (your GGG Grandfather) born in Wales? If so, do you know when he arrived in the US?

In terms of a coal miner in Chicago... there were many from North Wales that (after ariving in New York city) came inland to Racine, WI via the Great Lakes. Racine is only about 75 miles north of Chicago (120 km) so this may be why the Chicago area is being mentioned. BUT, a lot of the Welsh that landed in Racine, WI in the 1840's migrated further west to Central Wisconsin or Iowa, or Kansas to become land owners. Is there any reason why they feel that her father might have lived in Chicago?

@Kenneth Michael Morris... yes this is a free site! There's nothing to pay to get the full benefit of connecting with others.

Have been on here now for a few minutes and see that a large proportion of you are USA based.
I am Welsh born and bred but have one brick wall that needs to be hammered down.
My GG Grandmother born Sarah Hughes in the USA married twice in the Newbridge area of South East Wales.
From the only census she appears on in 1881 she is a young widow Sarah Williams born USA.
The 1891 census for the pub her and her second husband ran in Cwm Dows Monmouthshire is missing.
She died before the 1901 census.
I know her father was a John Hughes and she was born circa 1856 . She and her sister were sent back to Wales after a problem in the family but appart from this I have nothing.
Various people have looked at this from the American side and pointed me to Chicago. But as can be imagined no records exist prior to Chicago burning down.
My main scepticism about Chicago is what would a Welsh miner be doing in Chicago.
The most annoying part is my great grandmother Sarah's daughter was still alive when I was a child, my mother was evacuated to her house during WW2 and she never asked who why where. Loads of stories that explain who I am but no proof.

Hey that was quick I joined with out being vetted.
This is so Welsh!!!
Accepted at face value.
I like this.
Anyway about me --
So many Welsh family origins to describe so I better start at the earliest.
Earliest provable link Israel Rhyydderch born Swansea 1796 died 1885 in the Swansea workhouse. A man with a skill but an affinity with the demon alchol.
Sounds a lot like me when you think about it.
His legacy is long lasting:-)

First of all it is very important to know if this is a free site, as I have absolutely no means at my disposal of having to pay right now, I am very interested in finding my relatives and ancestry, my family connections are with the surnames Morris,Hughes, & McGirr, there may be more but these are all I know.
