Introduction

Welcome to the Wales and Welsh Genealogy Group. This is a group focused on Welsh Genealogy and other topics related to genealogy in Wales (map). Welsh Genealogy is not for the faint of heart and can be extremely challenging. But, it is also one of the most interesting pursuits and hobbies that you can find.

If you're just getting started, the BBC has a wonderful section on their web site devoted to Family History in Wales. If you're looking for more detail about Welsh Genealogy, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a great Research Outline for the Country of Wales.

I have also noticed the buttin labeled CAE is the correct abreviation for Caernarfonshire / Caernarvonshire but when it goes to the page it says Carmarthenshire instead of Caernarfonshire or Caernarvonshire.

I have noticed that you only have one picture of Capel Curig a'i fam Julita ( Chapel of St Curig and his mother Julitta). I have many photos of this Chapel. Some taken by The Friends of St Julitta, the group that maintains the chapel building, grounds & records. & some taken by My friend in Wales. I several ancestors buried there & have a copy of the MI transcripts for this Chapel.

@Stephanie Jones... In terms of in depth information about the migration from Wales to Racine, WI in the 1840's, the best source I've seen is a publication called "The Welsh in Wisconsin" by Phillips G. Davis, published bt the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1982. Basically, at this time travel via boat thru the Great Lakes (to Racine and Milwaukee) was the easiest route inland to less expensive land going westward (the direction that the U.S. was settled).

Hi, Chip. That's so interesting about the Welsh immigrants coming to Racine in the 1840s. I've not done much work on my HUMPHREYS family yet, but I have discovered that my ancestor Owen Humphreys was born around 1828 in Wales, came to the US around 1847, and was apparently in Racine, Wisconsin at least by the 1850s (his family eventually did move further west, all the way to Washington). I always wondered why Racine. Do have any sources to point me to that would give more information about the history of the Welsh in Racine?

Whilst browsing through the members names I noticed the surname MANLEY.
My Great Grandmother Katherine Manley was born in Cardiff.
