Introduction

Welcome to the Wales and Welsh Genealogy Group. This is a group focused on Welsh Genealogy and other topics related to genealogy in Wales (map). Welsh Genealogy is not for the faint of heart and can be extremely challenging. But, it is also one of the most interesting pursuits and hobbies that you can find.

If you're just getting started, the BBC has a wonderful section on their web site devoted to Family History in Wales. If you're looking for more detail about Welsh Genealogy, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a great Research Outline for the Country of Wales.

Hi, everyone. My Welsh connections are mostly in the middle ages, particularly the Marcher Lords, such as Rhys ap Gruffydd. I'm not much help with anything later than that, except maybe the GRIFFITH, STRADLING, PHILIPS and MATTHEWS lines. So, if you have medieval Welsh connections, I may be able to help.

Marie

Have you obtained the marriage certificate of Thomas Lewis & Mary Ann Morgan as that may help to narrow down your search. It will give the names and occupations of their fathers and possibly the ages of bride and groom. From that info. you might be able to track them down in census records before their marriage if they were living with parents. You can apply to the GRO for birth certs giving the father's and mother's names so that you only get the certificates where those details are correct. That can save you from getting the wrong certificates.

Hi everyone:
I'm new to the group. My Welsh research is for my Great-Grandparents Thomas Lewis, B: 24 Jan 1859 Aberdere, Pontypridd and Mary Ann Morgan, B: 1859 Tondu Ynysawdre, Bridgend. They had two children in Wales, Emma Catherine B: 1883 and John B1885. Thomas , Mary Ann & John are quite common in Wales so it's difficult to pin them down. The emigrated to Canada in 1887. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi All

I joined this group yesterday. My main interests in Wales (I live in St Fagans, Cardiff) are Morgan of Wenvoe, St Fagans & Llancarfan, Evans of Llancarfan & Llantrithyd, David of Llantrithyd & Bonvilston, James of Llandaff, Benjamin of Michaelston super Ely, all Glamorgan; also Ro(a)ch of Pembroke Dock & Abercarn, Monmouthshire. After 40 years researching I have a good knowledge of records of Cardiff & The Vale of Glamorgan and have a website partly devoted to those areas. However after all these years I still have a major brick wall in the birth/baptism of Michael Roch, a shipwright in the RN dockyard at Pembroke Dock, supposedly born c.1818 at "Shipping" but which of the various places of that name in Pembroke I don't know as he doesn't appear to be recorded in any of them. Also interested in his wife Jane Harbe(r)t(h) from Hakin.

Most of my research in Wales has been in the south. I am currently planning for another research trip to Wales in September 2009.

My mother's ancestors, the Rogers, Tudors, and Read etc. come from the villages around Hawarden in Flintshire north Wales. I would be happy to have contact with anybody who knows these families.
