Hi Kevin Lee. I tried to reply to your post earlier and it appears that it did not go through. From your information it appears that you must be a brother of Andrew Scott Vannoy, is this correct?  From DNA testing on Family Tree DNA "Family Finder" I show a match with Andrew - 3rd cousin (2nd-4th). I would be interested in discussing this with you further in an attempt to determine just how we are related. You can contact me at ehvgenealogy (at) ehv (dot) com. I will look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Gary, welcome to the group and thanks for the input on Elijah Vannoy's parents. Gary, have you seen any proof that Francis Vannoy was Elijah's father (Bible record, will, or anything else that would show that he was Elijah's father)? I have searched for years trying to find some proof. The only thing that I have been able to find is that some researchers have wondered if Francis might have been Elijah's father because of the fact that Francis (and some of his descendants) migrated to Kentucky to an area that was just north of where Elijah migrated to in Claiborne and Hancock Counties in Tennessee. This idea has been passed on and others have taken it as fact and it has become a kind-of "genealogy/Internet" legend. I have tried to fit Elijah as one of Francis' children in the late 1700s and early 1800s census records and find that researchers seem to have assigned too many children to Francis to fit. I would be overjoyed to find a proof that Francis was Elijah's father and I certainly hope that you may have it. The only thing that I have been able to find is a letter saying that a son of "Sheriff Joel" Vannoy of Wilkes Co., NC told other family members that his father (Sheriff Joel) and Elijah were brothers and that their father was "Nathaniel Elijah Vannoy". I can find no record of a Nathaniel Elijah Vannoy either. Many researchers feel that "Sheriff Joel's" father was Daniel Vannoy of Wilkes Co., NC. Both "Sheriff Joel" and Elijah would seem to fit the early census records as children of Daniel. Again, I can find no proof!! The only thing that I can find is a statement by "J. W.Hook" in his "Eller" book that Daniel "probably" was "Sheriff Joel's" father. I am now part of the "Vannoy DNA Project" in hopes that we may be able to find some DNA evidence as to who was Elijah's father???? Thus my question: have you seen any proof that Francis was Elijah's father?? Thanks Gary, I appreciate you assistance.

In reference to E. Harold's note about genealogy of "'Elijah Vannoy who was from Wilkes Co., NC"', His parents were Francis VANNOY [1746-1822] and Millicent 'Millie' HENDERSON [1755-1784]. After her death Francis married Margaret ALLEN [1780-1860]. Francis' parents were John VANNOY and Susannah Baker ANDERSON (of another immigrant Noord Holland family).__Elijah's son Elijah Jr. married Isabel HOLLAND, etc.

Harry, as I haven't covered all that family (and who could?), I can't help you with Anderson and Mason. I might assume that the given name Anderson followed a family member's marriage with someone from the local Anderson family; one of my Smith ancestors married the Anderson sister of such a Vannoy/Anderson marriage and the Anderson given name showed up in my line a couple of generations later.

Welcone Gary:
Do you have any info on a Anderson Vannoy or his son, Mason Vannoy? This is my brickwall. Thanks, Harry in IN

I have shirt-tail relatives in that family which sprung from Govert Van OY, born c.1620 in Noord Holland, Netherlands. His son Jan 'John' Van HOY [already!] immigrated to the Colonies and settled in Richmond Co., Staten Island, New York Colony. Jan's son John, and most others of the children, changed the surname spelling to VANNOY.
