The Shaker religious society of Kentucky

This is primarily for anyone interested in the Shakers at Pleasant Hill and South Union, KY. I am glad to share what I have researched and do lookups if you think you might have an ancestor that belonged to the Kentucky Shakers.

Yes...arrival date noted as same as the others......and I did forget to add she died on March 26, 1814...sorry. And she is listed as Jinny Shields.

Barbara, That is interesting. She arrived the same month as the rest of the Shields group. Is she listed as a shields? was it died 3/26/1814?
Thank you for all your help.

Mary McAchran Shields remained in Mercer Co., KY, after the death of her husband either late 1807 or early 1808. (The administrator's bond was filed on 25 January 1808). Be aware that there was another Mary who was married to a James Shields in Mercer County. The second James and Mary Shields lived in Harrodsburg, though, whereas our Shields lived to the east of town.

Barbara, Thank you for the added detail on those Shields. I had heard that William Sr. was There for a while. I would love to get down there sometime. Just can't get away now. Maybe have to bring the family there on a camping trip. Thanks again - Carolyn the shields from Pittsylvania VA are the shields that run down to me. James didn't join the Shakers married Had two kids then died His wife moved on to Indiana. Then the clan moved again to Trenton MO.
Later my grandfather moved to St. Paul so we could all freeze. :-)

I did not ask but is there any mention of William Sr's wife Jane or Jain?

Soon as possible VISTA is going away.....and putting Windows 7 on this one...later will work on getting a MAC mini..if I have it figured right, I will end up a two computer family....lol.

I looked at the Thomas name....thought that was familiar. There are two Anna Thomas's listed...

Anna Jr [this could be a daughter or one with same name but the younger of the two and not necessarily mother/daughter..if that makes sense.] born 10/4/1791 and it says Pleasant Hill, KY...that is not possible because the Shakers did not start forming in Mercer County or any of KY till 1805...then it says she arrived at Pleasant Hill in Feb 1806 and died 1/19/1816

Anna Thomas Sr was born 10/14/1756 in Virginia and arrived at Pleasant Hill in Feb 1806. She died 7/15/1823.

Elisha Thomas was born in Bucks Co, PA on 9/25/1862 and arrived at Pleasant Hill 8/1805...died 10/5/1838. He is considered one of the first to join the society and his farm became the refuge for the first Shakers till they began building the permanent village at Pleasant HIll. Am not sure but he may have been married to Anna Sr....know I've seen it somewhere but its not listed as such in the Rhorer book which took everything from the original journals of the Shakers...or those known....Filson Historical Society in Louisville, KY has the most at 33 in their manuscript dept. Harrodsburg Historical Society in Harrodsburg, KYhas maybe a dozen. There are others on microfilm.....but its nothing compared to what is lost....they kept meticulous journals....lots and lots of them. Western KY University in Bowling Green, KY has some for the society that formed at South Union and many of their early journals talk a lot about goings on at Pleasant Hill...they are on microfilm.

Let me know what else I can do.....barb

My PC with Vista about drove me crazy. We had to trash it and I switched to a Mac. Love it, now I just need to get a genealogy program on it. But thats what i listen to The Genealogy Guys Podcast for, they keep me informed on all things mac and computer. But, I know what you mean about Vista. That was one big nightmare for us.
