The cemetery now has development going on around it. The developer (Coventry) is aware of it, as is Exxon who has property adjacent. The HCHC has been trying to get all our cemeteries designated, at least, and hopefully marked in order that we do not continue to loose them to the elements of time and through development. When we can’t find a sponsor to submit the application for designation to the Texas Historical Commission (THC) then I try to take care of it. (that depends on how many at any given time because there is a $25 filing fee plus eventual filing with the county). I hope to find some organizations that have an interest in preserving Harris County Cemeteries who would “adopt” one of them.

Anyway, what I am doing now is working on the Monk Cemetery and collecting all the notes I’ve had over the years, information I received from the family, and anything else I can lay my hands on in order to come up with an accurate and reasonably complete historical narrative, maps, photos, etc.

Giving you credit, of course, I’d like to use the material you have on Find-A-Grave to intersperse with my information, and also use your photographs to submit with the application. I would like to get some current photographs, and will try.

I have not begun to fill out the THC application for designation yet, but would be happy to share it with you if you are interested.

I wrote about this today in the Texas History Hunter Blog so I won't rewrite the piece, small as it is.

If you want to read it, see here: http://bit.ly/bIkyzt

The bottom line is this: If you are NOT related to the person whose headstone you are photographing (if you are fulfilling a request) then you must get permission from the Director if the cemetery since each cemtery Director seets their own policy.

The databased hasn't been updated since 2007 but if you contact them by email, they will get the info to you. Also, I had emailed them about a family reunion being held and if they could let me know where the gravesite was so we could visit. They emailed me back, stated they had put out a stake with an orange ribbon so it would be easy to find.

I love cemeteries and photographing them. Not just for the genealogical info but as a way to help someone who is not close by to go to the cemetery themselves.

Over the years I have experienced wonderful, helpful people woking in the cemetery offices and sometimes I have experienced not so helpful people. It would have been nice to know before hand what to expect.

And as someone looking for a family plot for the future burials, I would like to know how my loved ones can expect to be treated after I am gone. I just read in a forum that there is a cemetery in GA that charges $12 just to look up & photograph a headstone. Because THEY offer this service, they will not allow anyone to photograph headstones in their cemetery!!!

Wonder how many people will decide not to be buried in that cemetery?

Because of these situations, I created the Cemetery and Funeral Home Reviews site. At present it is a sub-site of my genealogy site but one day I hope to have it on it's own domain.

So, if anyone would like to post their experience, I would welcome it as I can't get to all cemeteries, even though I would very much like to.

The rating system is on the home page and the Submit page has a form you just fill out. Very quick and painless. I do not share any info and you can see other reviews to see what was posted. The Texas page has the most since I live in Texas, although there are a few for Florida and 1 for NY.

If this is something you think you would like to be a part of "officially", then fill out the last box of the Review form as I assign a reviewer number and issue you business cards. This is for someone who goes to a cemetery for the purpose of reviewing it as opposed to someone who happened to visit a cemetery and had an interaction with the staff.

Thanks in advance to those who will help. Be sure to read the home page for more information.

This area was called (and may still be by the locals) as the Boykin Settlement and my understanding is that much of the land was part of the Boykin Planation. After the Civil War, many freed slaves stayed in the area, took the Boykin surname and their desc still live there today.
