Searching Sullivan roots in Kings County, Brooklyn, NY
My great great grandmother, Catherine Sullivan Flynn, was born in Ireland around 1830. She immigrated along with at least one brother, Daniel, around 1850 or so. She probably came with more family than that, but I'm not sure. She married Phillip Flynn in Brooklyn around 1858 and they had about 7 children. During the Civil War, they lived in Philadelphia but relocated to Brooklyn after the war. Her brother, Daniel, remained in Brooklyn and served in the Civil War. I would like to know where in Ireland they came from and where she and Phillip are buried in Brooklyn.

Do you know if Catherine had a brother John? My GGrandparents came to US in 1885 and moved to Mamaroneck NY. His name was John Sullivan and my ggrandmother was Catherine Lynch Sullivan. They had 10 children. I know there were many Sullivans in that area but do believe he has an older sister named Catherine. He was born, I believe, in Cork in 1851. I am told Catherine Lynch was born in Limerick in 1856, however, one cousin remembers her mother saying that Catherine was also born in Cork. I have a marriage certificate for a John and Catherine Sullivan married in 1871 in Limerick. I do believe this is them. Their first born was Margaret in 1873 and I have a birth record for a Margaret born in Limerick in 1873 to a John and Catherine Sullivan. I can tell you that most Sullivans or OSullivans came from Cork. I too am trying to find death records for both of my ggrandparents. I have called all area towns and villages in Westchester, except White Plains, and to no avail. I have also called area cemeteries and Catholic churches looking for records but could not find them. Perhaps together we can find out some information of our Sullivan clans. I plan to go to Albany NY to look in the county archives for records(weather permitting). I will keep an eye out for yours also. Keep in touch.

Hi, Thanks for your response but I don't believe there is a connection. My Catherine came to the US before 1860 and she was born in 1830 or so. She did have a brother named Daniel who ws born in Ireland around 1835. Other than that, I don't have much information. If you do go to Albany, I would appreciate anything you might turn up. I live in Indiana now and so do not have that opportunity. Let me know how you fare.

I do hope to make it up there and will look for death records. If you get a record it should state where in Ireland they were born. Are you a member of Ancestry? They have census records and death records that may be of help to you. If you are not a member, let me know. I would be happy to look that info up for you. Also, do you have any idea when they may have died?

Yes, I belong to Ancestry. I have gotten death records but have never gotten one which states the county in Ireland. I have tried marriage certificates an was abl to find the Irish county for one o my great grandfathers. If you could, I'd love to know when Phillip Flynn (born 1827) and Catherine Sullivan Flynn (born 1830) died. I have found them in the 1897 directory so clearly, they died after that in Brooklyn. They don't appear in the 1900 census in Kings County so that narrows it down to about 3 years. I havecalled Holy Cross Cemetery in Brookklyn and they don't have them, nor does St. John's Cemetery. I haven't tried Calvary, though. Anyway, if I can be of help to you...I'd be most happy to do something for you. Let me know.l -

The three year span will really help. The death record I got was for my Grandmother. She died in CT in 1951 and it did list her birth place as Limerick, Ireland. Of course one of my great aunts or uncles gave that information to the funeral home. I have to assume it is correct although one cousin says it was Cork and my mother tells me that her mother-in-laws mother was born in New York. Hows that for confusing information . LOL Did you try Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla?? I was told that many used that cemetery, but not sure if it was open by the late 1800's.
I am more than happy to look and see if I can find a death record for Catherine and Phillip. All we have to do is pray the weather is okay for the first week in March. I live in SC and all my relatives came from NY on my fathers side. My mothers parents were born in the Slovak republic and lived in CT. It is impossible to get records for them as I do not know what village they were born in and you need that info. I plan to send for the death certificates but hold little hope that anyone knew since my Mom does not. She and one Uncle are the only remaining siblings. My husbands grandparents all came from Italy. I did get some info but it is in Italian and I need help with that too. I wish you could help me but right now we both are not close to NY. I will give you my email address so that you can contact me directly. It makes it much easier especially when I am in CT as I can use my daughter or sons computer to let you know how I made out. Thank you for being willing to help me out. I don't think they would have been buried in Valhalla since they were all living in ?Brooklyn and the rest of the family is divided between Holy Cross and St. John's.
It's funny...all the conflicting information you get when you start this search. I have no one left alive to ask and since the records I need are so old, it really gets tough. But I have tapped local Brooklyn churches and am still sending for remote relatives' death certificates in the hope of finding a clue. You ar right that a relative would give the information to the funeral home as to the locale they came from and often, the relative didn't know or had wrong information. But it's fun.

Finally getting back to you. I was in NY again a couple of weeks ago but found nothing for Catherine Flynn. Have you been on the website cmcrp.net? I has a lot of valuable info and may be of some help. Also RootsIreland.com can help but does charge. Most Sullivans came from three area, Cork (largest population of Sullivans), Limerick and Tipperary. If you can isolate these area and put in a birth dat of 1830 you may come up with more than a few. Also was Phillip born in Ireland? If they were married in Brooklyn you could try to get the marriage certificate and it should state the name of at least her father. Some certificates state the mothers maiden name and where they were born. It is worth a shot. Have you checked with Brooklyn are cemeteries? Most are happy to look up the name and see if they are buried there. Keep me posted.
