I have a large number of ancestors who lived in St. Louis. I have found the resources on the STLGC extremely useful, including the cemetery index for Chesed Shel Emeth. I was wondering if someone could tell me if there would be any value in contacting funeral homes or the monument company about many of these ancestors. For example, there are some ancestors whose gravestones I have been able to locate but not read (due to age). Most of the people in question died between 1910-1958, so I have death certificates for them (although not all contain father's name). What sort of information could I expect to get from contacting these businesses, given the privacy concerns at hand? Thanks for your assistance,

Sometimes you can hit pay dirt at the funeral home and/or monument company, but you never know. There is one active Jewish funeral home in St. Louis, and that is Berger. They will respond to an individual request. There used to be a few others, but they are now gone. There is an index to some records from those funeral homes on our website: .
The monument company that has served the Jewish community for most of the time period you are interested in is Rosenbloom Monument, which is still actively in business at 7511 Olive St. Rd. in University City, the first suburb due west of the city of St. Louis. They have a lot of information on file and are usually very good about genealogical inquiries. You may pick up those parent names and/or what the tombstones actually said at one time by asking them. In some cases, they have copies of obituaries and/or information about other people buried in the same lot. Your mileage will vary!
Death certificates in Missouri are currently available online up to 1958, so I don't think that privacy will be too much of a problem. Of course, each private business sets its own rules, so you won't know until you ask. I've had no trouble with a record from the 1970s at Rosenbloom, so you should be OK unless they have recently changed their policy.
