Lori,

Thank you very much. I will check these out. Meantime, Leman's youngest son was Leman, Jr. and he was born about 1841 so the Civil War period would not be too late for him. I am also aware that this area produced many soldiers. Samuel Montgomery had four grandsons (all brothers) who served and all returned to Adams Co.

Hi Shar,

I don't know if you have seen this site before or not but I thought I would throw it out there for you. (it is a good link you will have to copy and paste it, for some reason links on the comment wall do not come across as live links)
http://members.cox.net/swarling/gifford/monmouth0001.htm
this is a site of the descendants of Annaniah GIFFORD.

I also found these two sites that might give you some history:

Adams County, Ohio Genealogical Records Information
http://www.myohiogenealogy.com/oh_county/ad.htm

Scioto County, Ohio Genealogical Records Information
http://www.myohiogenealogy.com/oh_county/sc.htm

I will add these two links to the county page they are for so they will be easy to just click on if any one needs them.

Doing Google search I found a few hits for Leman Gifford, but they were more Civil War related and I don't know if that is too late in time for your Leman.

As I have time I will hunt around and see if I can find anything else.

Scioto Co.

I have researched a number of ancestral lines in southeast Adams Co. It seems as if members of some of the families resided in what became Scioto Co. once its western boundary with Adams Co. was set in the early 1800s. I am particularly interested in families named Montgomery along that line in Scioto Co. Samuel Montgomery settled in Stouts, Green Twp., Adams Co., ca. 1798-99. Either a couple of his sons disappeared or died, or other of his children or grandchildren disappeared, especially where they seem to have also spent time in Scioto Co. Additionally, a well known Hugh Montgomery family from PA seem to pass through this area and then move on to Decatur Co., Indiana, just after his married daughter and son-in-law from Adams Co., migrate there, and later Samuel's widow migrates there and seems to have ties to the Hugh Montgomery family. Her maiden name was Barker and she may have married Samuel about 1790 in PA. If anyone can provide any clues to the general settlement of southwest Scioto Co., and families there that earlier may have been counted in Adams Co., I would appreciate it. I am also specifically trying to find out what happened to Leman Gifford and Elizabeth Montgomery Gifford. They had some tie to Scioto Co. He seems to have died or disappeared right after 1840, then she disappears. One of the eight children, Nancy Gifford Bennington, has been found in adulthood, but she was already married about the time her parents go missing. I have had good luck figuring out lives from learning the history of settlement in these areas; I haven't learned much about Scioto Co. Thank you for any help.

Pam,
No worries. I have been away for a few days myself. We had a death in the family and I have been spending a lot of time with my cousin's and Uncles. The loss of my Aunt was very sad but the rest of us have had a great time remembering wonderful times and sharing Great pictures. I even ended up with a picture of my Great Great Grandfather and some pictures of my Dad when he was a young boy.

But the great mailing list I am on have been busy so i am going to post some more links. And I have not given up on looking for your Caughran family in Ross Co.

Hi Pam,

I have not done much research in Ross Co. but I did some searching last night. Sorry to say, so far I have not found any thing more than you seem to have. But I will keep hunting around and see if I can come up with anything new for you.

I'm looking for information on the CAUGHRAN family who lived in Ross Co.,OH. circa 1800. My 2xgreat-grandfather was Garret W.CAUGHRAN who was born in 1806 the son of Benjamin & ? I don't know the name of his mother yet. The mother died & Benjamin took his 6-7 children & moved to SE IL. where they stayed in Lawrence Co.,IL.

Thanks for any help! Also, I'd like to hear from any descendants.

Lori, go right ahead and add whatever info I have given you...I do have family info in some of my files in my email I can access here that I had forgotten..If there is anything else I can help with, just let me know........

Thanks Brenda! As far as I know I do not have any family from Scioto county, but I wanted some links to put in the Scioto County Discussion for if anyone else that has family from there.

I do have the Portsmouth Library in the Discussion for South West Ohio Libraries. Would you mind if I add these other links to the Scioto County Discussion or you can add them there if you would like.

I thought it would be easier for people looking if all the sites for a County were together rather than have to go through all the post looking.
