ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTION OF DIRECTORS

We are quickly approaching a very important date for the Society – the SCGS Annual Meeting, which will be held on Saturday, December 12. All members are strongly encouraged to attend this important meeting of the Society.

At the Annual Meeting:

1. Election of Board members will be announced. Have you cast your ballot yet? If not, you have until Wednesday, December 9 to do so. Mail your ballot or drop it off at the SCGS Library

2. Society leaders will look back at the successes of 2009 and look forward to the goals set for 2010.

3. Jamboree plans will be announced.

4. The annual Silent Auction will be held. It’s not too late to donate your items – just bring them to the Library by Thursday, December 10. Be sure to mark the items with the estimated value so that Jim and Pat Fryman can have a great sale. When you’re shopping, remember this is a fundraising activity for SCGS and open your pocketbooks.

5. We’ll give away a full registration to Jamboree.

6. Think about bringing a gift for the Society. How about bringing a ream or two of copy paper, office supplies, cleaning supplies, paper towels, etc.

7. Oh, and one more thing. We’ll have our usual FABULOUS potluck meal.

We open the food lines at 11:30 a.m. and begin the business meeting at 12:45 p.m. Come early to shop at the silent auction and to socialize with the other SCGS members.

The Library will be closed for research on Saturday, December 12 and there will be no Lunch & Learn session on that day.

Last year, my brother and I decided to not exchange gifts. I bought a DNA testing kit, gave it to him, and asked for just a little of his spit. I didn't know if he'd go along with it, but he got quite the chuckle and agreed to be tested.

To get the special pricing, click on the FamilyTreeDNA icon on the main page of the SCGS website at www.scgsgenealogy.com. (Look toward the bottom right.)

Here's the message from Family Tree DNA:

2009 is coming to a close and we're finishing it off with an end-of-the-year promotion!

Our Holiday Season promotion will bring back the discount that we offered this summer for the Y-DNA37.

Y-DNA37 – promotional price $119 (reg. price $149)
Y-DNA67 – promotional price $209 (reg. price $239)
mtDNAPlus – promotional price $139 (reg. price $149)
SuperDNA – promotional price $488 (reg. price $665)

Orders for the above tests need to be placed and paid for by December 31, 2009 to receive the sale price.

IMPORTANT: since this promotion will run through the months of November and December, we encourage you to spread the word starting now, as the natural tendency is for people to order at the last minute, and we will not extend it beyond 12/31/2009.

In addition here are the newly released permanent prices for the Full Mitochondria Sequence:

New kit (mtDNA Full Sequence) … $279
Upgrade from HVR1 … $229
Upgrade from HVR2 … $209
mtDNA Full Sequence after testing Y-DNA … $249

Thank you for your continued support. We appreciate your contribution to the sustained growth of the Family Tree DNA matching database, the best genealogical matching tool of its kind.
Trying to track down information on family of G-Aunt Bridget Rowan last Address was 499 28th St, SanFrancisco
I have a letter from her dated May 13 1939 she stated her son or perhaps grandson Eddie was injured building the Golden Gate Bridge. I can not find any more information on her I thought perhaps there might be an Obituary somewhere that would list her family
Would appreciate any help or steering to right organization. Kathyn Brannigan Walizer

What's the Genealogy Karma Bank? Some genealogists believe that by doing kindnesses for others, "what goes around comes around" and you'll strike some genealogy gold of your own.

Now, I don't know whether that's true or not. But I'm of a mind that (A) I owe much to the genealogists who came before us, who compiled hundreds of thousands of index pages and transcriptions and (B) I can replay that debt by transcribing and posting information for those who follow me down this family history…

Now, I don't know whether that's true or not. But I'm of a mind that (A) I owe much to the genealogists who came before us, who compiled hundreds of thousands of index pages and transcriptions and (B) I can replay that debt by transcribing and posting information for those who follow me down this family history path.

Would you like to make a deposit in the Genealogy Karma Bank by helping transcribe the 1886 Encampment Directory for the California and Arizona Grand Army of the Republic? These entries cover the states of California and Arizona during the key period of growth in California. The listing precedes the San Francisco earthquake and fire by 10 years and it may be used as a substitute for the 1890 census.

The names included in this directory represent Civil War Union soldiers from units around the United States. Transplants from the eastern and midwestern states were coming to California for the economic promise, for the weather, and for their health.

I am attaching a representative page from the directory so you can see what you would be transcribing. I have been entering the information into an Excel spreadsheet and I will provide you with the template. I have been increasing the size of the PDF to 150% of original size and transcribing directly from the screen. You may have better luck printing the file. Whatever works best for you is fine.

The data will be made available FREE of charge on the SCGS website at www.scgsgenealogy.com.

If you are interested in helping with this project, please replay to this discussion item and I'll get in touch to get you the files.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and interest in our project.
You'll also find the "It's All About You" section of the store, where you can order an item made specifically for you. If you were at Jamboree, you saw the SCGS Tree Shirts, which listed each person's surnames on the back of the SCGS polo shirt. You can order a tote bag, coasters, calendar, etc. Here's what my shirt looks like:

If you are interested in purchasing an item with your surnames, send an email to phinkel@pacbell.net and put CafePress in the subject line. List the surnames you want printed on the back, one name per line in the email, and make sure they are in the order you want them to appear on the shirt. Double-check your spelling, too. Limit the surnames to less than 20 otherwise it looks too crowded. I'll get back to you with a design and further instructions.
