Hi all I know I did a comment about a week ago on sourcing but I have no idea where or to whom I sent it to. Cheezzzz.. But what I did say in a nut shell was that I get 90% of my information from Ancestry and whatever is good I just add to my person of interest at the time. I do print it out and it has on the bottom of the page when and where it came from. So that's part of my sourcing.

Welcome Amy-
You sound like you are really trying to get at the people, really know them, not just the facts, which is great!:) Keep at it! Can you tell us how you organize your information? What are some things you've learned as you have worked on your research. :)

Welcome to all the new members. I’ve been on vacation, and unfortunately had an accident and will not be on much for a while (can’t really type). I appreciate all who contribute to the discussions and know we all are learning from each other. Please have fun and keep up the great discussions, Cary

On Ancestry when you upload a Gedcom file it does not upload
your sources. If your upolad your Family Tree Maker file it does.
I uploaded my file through the program and it uploaded all the sources.
It is a weakness in the Gedcom file type. Maybe someone needs to update
the ability of this type of file to keep photos and sourcing.

Hi all, I just wanted to let everyone know I am having trouble with my server. I keep getting bumped off, so I don’t know when I will be able to just get on.

Thanks, it works for me. It might not work for everyone.

Debra, you do have a great system. When I work for others I am very organized, making copies, compiling paper work, etc. For myself, not so much. Probably because I do it so often for others.

I guess it’s time for me to get on the organization train and make sure I do my own as nicely as I do a clients. You inspire, all!!

Hi Debra-
It sounds like you have a great system to keep track of your sources. I know I've personally saved and resaved census records I find, even though I know its on a backup disc somewhere, I'm always afraid that someday I'll forget where it is. :)

I think at some point we figure out that if we are better organized we will be more effective at finding those missing bits and pieces, and not rework those pieces we've already found. I can't wait til I can have a place where I lay out my work in its own room without fear of my children stepping on it or eating it.

I've had a database with probably 170 names become corrupted on me, and so I'm hesitant to start adding my names and dates again. I use Linux as my Operating System, so I'm a bit limited in the software I can use, but for now I'm ok with that. :)

When I found something in courthouse's or libaries, I make a copy. Then I come home and make another copy of it and then scan on copy to my laptop. I put one copy in that family's file, one in their 3 ring binder, and the scan copy in my genealogy program, that way if I don't have my laptop or their binder with me. I know that I have a copy of that record. On the back of one copy, I put where I found it and the date I found it. I do the same thing with picture's. Becasuse I was getting two or three pictures of the same headstone.

If some one send me a descendants report, I put it in a 3 ring binder and write their name and the date on the top of the report. That way when I go to put the information in my program, I know who sent it to me and the date, they sent it. I learn that one the hard way.

I now put my back up file on my flash drives, that way I don't have to spend days and days putting all my information back in. I also learn this the hard way.
