Hi, Linda.

To help in your researching of James B. Smith, bear in mind that after the Revolutionary War the counties of western Virginia beyond the Appalachian Mountains were known as Kentucky County, Virginia. The area was not a State until June 1, 1792 (and, it was a major source of bounty land for Rev War vets). This might point you more toward Virginia records for help. ---Cheers, Gary Smith

Hello. I am a Smith from MN. The route here was with great-grandfather John James who had moved to Dane County WI from Chautauqua Co. NY and then on to MN after the Civil War. John was born in Tompkins Co. NY and his father, Hiram, was born in VT in about 1812. His mother, Lydia McGowan Smith, was born in NJ about 1816. Hiram is our "brick wall." We are members of Family Tree DNA Northeastern Smiths, Group 3 - Francis of Taunton and Hingham MA.

Hey Kenneth! I am looking for Daniel Smith, too, and I was wondering if he might have not been born in VA. Or possibly he emigrated to VA or maybe he was born in Maryland or another state that is close?

Gosh thanks all of you but I truly don't know my fathers parents name. The only link would be his mother my grandmother who at the time was married to a "Harriman". Her name was Florence Mae (Allen) Harriman and she was married to Arthur Granville Harriman at the time. I believe that she had my father Harry Douglas Harriman-Smith in Troy New York. This is where her family lived so she went home to have him. Dad carried the Harriman name all the way through school and when he went into the service had his name change leagally to Smith.. So thats why I say New York genealists would be able to help here if they know any Harrimans or Allens..Thanks.Oh my father was born in 1924 in Troy New Yok.
