My main surname of interest in the Valley is Roush (originally Rausch). They were in Frederick & Shenandoah counties in the mid- and late-1700's. Surnames of spouses from the Valley include Zerkel/Zirkle, Fuchs (Fox), and Kelchner.

HAYS: My direct paternal ancestor John Hays (wife Rebecca) purchased land in the Borden Tract in 1740. He built his plantation just two miles north of Rockbridge Baths. It was there on a natural mill site, where Hays Creek and Moffett's Creek ran together, that John Hays built the first fulling mill in what later become Rockbridge County (est. 1778).
Barger, Gay, Carnahan families. They all moved to Clay and Hazard Cos. in Ky by around1800
