also sarah sinclair passed away young & an aunt lizzie [elizabeth duncan] was in the family taking care of the house .we are not sure if she married robt. sr. also have letter,s when robt.jr. was in England ww11
he went to visit his father in scotland so he was alive thru those years.Wm. Rodger [brother] imigrated to australia never heard from again

the "'Rodger'" family are from Glasgow I have the birthcertificate of Robert Rodger born Aug 25th 1903 also of Minnie Murphy Rodger born oct 17 1901 my [inlaws] they married in 1925. The mother of Rob.t was Sarah Sinclair born 1863. Father Robert Rodger SR.

My G-G-G-G Grandfather John McILHERAN was born in Scotland in 1767. He settled in Cowan, Tennessee and died there in 1843. He is buried on the family farm in Cowan, TN, in the "McIlheran Cemetery". A decedent of the John McILHERAN family still owns the family farm.

You're in a bit of luck since you have 3 less usual forenames among the 4 potential parents. You'll need to make a lit of all the children your William had, and see whether the names correspond to either set of parents. Chances are, of course, that Patrick and Ninian were related and if they had big families may have used all the names. If they were (again for example) brothers, they might both have called their first son after their common father (William?) but then I'd expect "Ninian" to turn up earlier in Ninian's brood and "Philip" in Philip's brood.

Occupations can also provide clues - some were almost hereditary (eg blacksmiths seem to produce lots of blacksmiths).

My 6th ggfather is William Flockhart of Dunning in Perth. Unfortunately, Scottish OPRs show two William Flockharts of the right age: c.11 Dec 1720, son of Patrick Flockhart and Margaret Sharp, and c. 20 Sep 1719, son of Ninian Flockhart and Sarah Young - I have no idea how to have to establish which is the right William.

Thoughts?

I'm confused here - at the start of this you say that John was born in Burntisland, NSW, then at the end you're searching Burntisland, Scotland. Why do you think that one leads to the other?

"Have gone on to find parents for a John McDonald and Agnes Pringle but have I got the right person? I hope I have but how can I be sure. Have printed copies from Scotlands People of this info on John and Agnes."

You are right to be suspicious as the mother's forename and father's occupation are different. I would start by looking for a death certificate for the son of Agnes/John - if he died in Scotland, he can't be your guy in NSW. If he doesn' t seem to have died in Scotland, I would them list all of his children and those of John/Agnes children and look for corresponding names. It's just an indicator, of course, unl;ess a rare forename is involved. Did any of his siblings move to Oz? Can you find them listed to John/Agnes?
