I thought it would be a good idea to have a list of websites people have found useful for researching their Scottish ancestors and for all things Scottish. I invite everyone to add their favourites. Here are some of mine:

http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk - the website of the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh, includes useful background information on getting started in your research and on Scottish records

http://www.nas.gov.uk - The National Archives of Scotland

http://www.edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot - The Statistical Accounts of Scotland - historical information on every parish in Scotland

http://www.dsl.ac.uk - Dictionary of the Scots Language

http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk - The Scottish Register of Tartans

http://www.scotlandsimages.com - Images from Scotland's national collections

http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/gaztitle.html - A gazetteer for Scotland with historical information.

http://www.scotsfind.org/ - Scottish Genealogy Databases - mostly related to Edinburgh area.

http://www.nls.uk/maps/index.html - The map library in the National Library of Scotland. A wide range of maps on line for immediate viewing.
Besides the great ones already listed by others, I was able to locate family grave stones using:

http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/databank/miindex/miindex.php : Index to MI Booklets published by ANESFHS

which once I found the plot # or kirkyard.... I sent a request to

http://www.raogk.org/scotland.htm : which then I was able to connect with a person willing to go out and take photos of the grave stones

Always a good place to start:

I just learned of a couple of websites I was previously unaware of. One is an off-shoot of Scotland's People and is called Scotland'splaces. Great for old maps and gazetteers of old communities. On this website, you need to search by PLACE not by person. This is not a pay per view site, it is free.

URL is: http://www.scotalndsplaces.gov.uk

other sites of interest:

http://www.nls.uk/ (National Library of Scotland)

http://www.scottishhandwriting.com/

http://www.genuki.org.uk

http://www.hharp.org (Scottish & English hospital records)

Happy Searching!!

Try scotlandsplaces.gov.uk if the link above dos not work

For Douglas ancestors, it has to be the Douglas Archives. Note different sections for genealogy, history, biographies and more.
