If you have the first names then it would be worth buying the credits - you get 30 for £6.00 and will probably need 6 for each certificate. The Scottish certificates are very useful giving both father and mother. When you search you can specify the county - Glasgow and the parish - Hutchesontown as well as name and year. There are no birth images after 1909 but you can see the actual entry before that and you could see the marriages which give the parents of both parties.

Simon, have you checked out Family Search? There are some late entries there but it is the 1881 census that may help you out, if you haven't seen it already.
You really should use Scotland's people as the 1901 census could give ages of both your grandfather's father and grandfather if alive then, enabling you to pinpoint there births. You could probably get the census and two certificates for the basic 30 credits which is very good value. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay.

Thanks for both of your replies. I think I shall give Scotlands People a go. Though I'll wait until next week, as my Aunty is going in to Glasgow on Monday to try and find out some more information.

You really can find out a reasonable amount with just a few credits on Scotlands People. It only costs 1 credit to get basic information which often you can be reasonably sure it is the correct person before spending the 5 credits for a full certificate. For Scottish ancestry I wouldn't go past them. I wouldn't have anywhere near the information on my family tree that I have now if I had relied on other sites, particularly free ones.

If you don't want to spend too much credit on the ScotlandsPeople website but you or a relative can get to Glasgow you could try The Family History Centre at the Mitchell Library. You can access all the information there (including census records) for free and staff are very helpful.

You can access most of the resources that are on the ScotlandsPeople website at the Strathclyde Genealogy Centre in Glasgow or at the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh. There is daily fee to use these centres but as you can access an unlimited number of records during your visit, including modern records that are not on the website, you will almost certainly save money overall.
