This is photo of William leading a parade, I've been trying to date it, but haven't been successful yet.

Hi Kate~
Yes, this is him. He's shown on the 1861 Census as attending Charterhouse School, but I didn't have this reference. Thank you. I'm really curious about his life in America, though... I'll post a separate discussion.

Hi Elizabeth-
Doing a quick Google search, I see this reference:

Hi!
I'm new here. I'm looking for a relative named Henry Venn Brandram SMITH b. 1852-3 in Hong Kong and who emigrated from England to the US in 1892. On the 1920 census he is living at 661 - 8th Avenue, Manhattan, and his occupation is shown as an actor in moving pictures.
I would dearly love to find out more about him, and wonder if this 'career' (he had many...) might be a worthwhile avenue to explore. But how?

Welcome, Richard. :) I'd be interested to hear more about Owen, especially how he started the Cotton Club.

Did Leila ever make a movie with Goldwyn?

I also have an infamous relative, whom my grandfather said was his 5th cousin. His name was Owen (Oney) Madden; His claim to fame was that he was the only ever Irish boss in the Italian Mafia, He started the Cotton Club in Harlem New York. Our relationship is through family legend.

I have 2 somewhat famous relatives involved with notariaty, One was Miss Bessy Van Ness (Madden) Mulligan; a stage performer in 1909 time frame. The other was Leila (Madden) Charles who was Mrs. Cleveland Ohio in 1922 and then went on to place 3rd in the America Beauty Pageant in Atlantic City, She was also taken to New York to be filmed Goldwyn Studios for a screen test. They also offered her a role in a motion picture.

You are quite right, Kate. It is 'Horton's Ice Cream' ! He then becomes a 'Commercial Clerk' ( Marriage Certificate) and 'Actor' ( Death Certificate)

On my grandfather's Marriage Certificate he lists his father as Louis Hope, deceased, occupation 'Architect'.

Hi Sonia-

I saw him on the 1891 census and saw his occupation was manager of Ice Cream store? I couldn't read the name of the store, but assuming he was a 'confectioner'?

Thank you so much, Maggie and Kate. That was quick ! I have his date of death and district so I will look in to where he might be buried.
Would not know, Kate, if he performed in the US. His last occupation followed that of architect and several other more lowly jobs.

Welcome, Sonia!

If you'd like to start a discussion above, and post the records and 'definite' information regarding Louis, that would be great. That way you can follow the thread more easily and see any clues as we find them. :) Also, please post any possible aliases.

Do you know if he ever performed in the US? I will try my likely sources and see what I can find!

Kate
