Bringing in the Hay

Hay-cutting began on the 20th (afterwards 25th) July, and the scene of operations was the wild prairie. The outer two miles of each river frontage belonged, for hay purposes, to the frontage owner up to a certain date, but for the most part cutting was done on prairie that was free as air to everybody. Nadine - welcome. Which of Francis and Mary's children was your ancestor? I don't know much about any of them except Albert. I was able to follow his family because he moved to the U.S.

My great-grandfather was Angus, brother of John "Bushy" Matheson [1810-1898]. He and his wife Isabella (Livingston) and their two small sons, Alexander and James, moved to Delaware County, Iowa, in 1840. My grandfather, John, the seventh of their eleven children, was born in January 1847, just after Iowa was admitted to the Union.

Hello,

I am a brand new member.  I have documents that say I am descended from the Mathesons, Murrays, Pritchards and Smyths and am interested in learning as much as I can.

My great grandfather was Francis W. Murray whose father was a Lord Selkirk settler and Fracis who was born in Old Kildonan on the family homestead. His wife was Mary Matheson a sister of the Archbishop of Rupert's Land.  I have a copy of his obituary but the date was cut off. I also have their original marriage certificate of March 7, 1876.  I have a family tree of the Pritchards & Mathesons going back to John Pritchard 1657 -1737 descended from the Pritchards of Middleton, Chisbury.

Hi

I descend from John Pagee Matheson and Ann Nancy Polson and also through his father Alexander Matheson of Coirag who followed in the late 1820's.

Always interested to learn more about the settlement and distant ancestors.

Also, I am looking for relatives of Stuart Gordon Matheson, origionally from the Selkirk MB area, who passed away in the 1980's in Ontario.

Hi Mel~
Welcome to the Red River forum!
I can't seem to post to you own page, so hope you see this!
Are you descended from John Cooper and Mary McKinnon?
Hope to chat with you sometime!

Actually, I am not descended from Donald and Ann Livingston, but from Donald's brother James, and Sarah Bowie. Also from Alexander (b. 1781) and Ann Matheson of Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and the Red River Settlement. James's daughter Isabella and Alex's son Angus married in 1836 and moved to Iowa with two small sons in 1840. My grandfather John Matheson was born in 1847.
I have learned quite a lot about the descendants of the Livingstons and their friends who left the Red River Settlement for Iowa and beyond. Donald has a great many more descendants than James, their brother Hugh or their sister Catherine McLean. James and Hugh both had large families but many of their children and grandchildren did not have any children, and Catherine lost half of her children at young ages.
I've learned a lot about the history and geography of the U.S., too, as I've traced the movements of people around the country. Interestingly, one of my dad's relatives on his mother's side moved to Saskatchewan for awhile after having been born in Iowa and living there for quite a few years. Then they moved to California. So there's another Canadian connection I just learned about recently.

You and Edith and I are cousins, then, Doug. Edith shares descendancy from Donald and Ann, I go one generation further back, as I am descended from Ann's sister Catherine.
www.lordselkirk.ca is the best place online for learning more about the settlement as a whole. See the feed above.
As the Genealogist at TLSARL, I have collected a fair bit about Donald Livingston as I've read through the journal entries of settlement officials. Joining the association would give you access to this information for a small fee, also, members receive a quarterly newsletter packed with history and news. We are getting ready for the bicentennial of our ancestors' arrival at Red River. Among other things, we are planning a trip to Scotland to visit ancestral sites. You can put in a request for membership info on the site in the Contact Us form.

Hi

I descend from Donald Livingston and Ann McGillivray, and so also through his father Neil who followed in 1819.

Not spending much time on genealogy these days, but always interested to learn more about the settlement.

Hello Doug!
I am unable to leave a comment on your page for some reason, so will do so here.
Welcome to GenealogyWise and the Red River Settlement Rupert's Land Group!
Which Livingston is yours?
May I also recommend you check out www.lordselkirk.ca, which is the Red River Settlers' descendant's site? I write a blog there about the history of the settlement and also post any news about our association there.
I look forward to seeing you at the forum!

Hi!
I'm the Genealogist for The Lord Selkirk Association of Rupert's Land, an Association dedicated to preserving the history of the original Selkirk Settlers at Red River and their descendants.
I hope to meet more here who have an interest in the origins of what is now Manitoba. Although my own family were Scottish and English in the 1812 and 1815 groups, I'm always interested in learning more about the other people who populated the area over time.
Ask questions, search for relatives, share your ancestors' stories - just start a Discussion! You might start by introducing yourself under your ancestor's name...
See you around!
