Pritchard family crest and name history

Where did the surname Pritchard origin from? The name is believed to origin from the personal name Richard and was originally "ap-Richard", Welsh meaning "son of Richard".

Pritchard are known to have a lot of different spelling variation and therefor it might be a bit difficult to track down ancestors of Pritchard's without knowing about these variations, among them Prichard, Prickard, Pritchard and so on.

First found around 1066 AD in Glamorganshire.

House of Names have researched the Pritchard family crest and I strongly recommend to read more about both the crest and the name history for the Pritchard family on their website.

Hi Lisa McKnight,

Maybe you and Paula Lynn Chorpitta can exchange some relevant info with each other as she was asking about the Pritchard's of Minatoba last year (see earlier post). Good luck to you both!

Hi Eva Thanks for your replies.  No I dont know if Mary Ann was a Miss or a Mrs... and I hadnt considered her being a Mrs (ie that its a Mr Pritchard I perhaps should be looking for)... good tip - fresh eyes and brains always help.  I'll have a look at the Family History Research in Ireland link and see what I can find.  Thanks again for your help!

Hi Michelle,

I have done a search in my archives, but I'm sorry to say I can't find anything to help you at this time, as I don't have a lot of information about Pritchard's in Ireland and Australia.

You might find your answer if you do more research on Abigail's family in Ireland. Maybe someone in her family emigrated to Australia before Frederick and Rachel emigrated there.

Also, do you know if Mary Ann was Ms or Mrs Pritchard when she was a witness in Frederick's wedding?

If I find anything that might help you, I will let you know.

If anyone know anything or have got any tips on where Michelle can do more research, please help, as it can be hard to find all the details by oneself.

Good luck!

Hi I have a Pritchard ancestor - Abigail Pritchard who lived around Whitehouse, Co Antrim, Ireland:

Frederick Greer Hanna b. c, 1856/7 Whitehouse, Co. Antrim, Ireland par: Langford Hanna and Abigail Pritchard.
Langford and Abigail m. 12 Feb 1846, Newtownabbey Co. Antrim Church of Ireland - both addresses given as Whitehouse.
Abigail's father Patrick Pritchard, Mason; Langford's occupation Mason, father Thomas Hanna, Labourer.

They had at least two other children - Rachel Malcolmson Hanna and Mary, born Whitehouse, baptised 13 June 1851 St Annes Shankill Co. Antrim, Church of Ireland.

Rachel and Frederick Hanna both emigrated to Australia, and both married in Brighton Victoria (Melbourne) in 1886. At Frederick's marriage to Rosina Hammond, a Mary Ann Pritchard was one of the witnesses.

I am trying to find a link between this Mary Ann Pritchard and Frederick's mother's family in Ireland.
Any help appreciated. I have been unable to locate arrival details for Frederick, Rachel or the only Pritchard family I have been able to locate with a Mary Ann born in Australia - of course she may have been born in Ireland and emigrated with Frederick and Rachel, or she may be completely unrelated - just a coincidence.

Hi Paula,

sorry for late replay, but I don't think we are related to the Pritchard's of Manitoba, don't even know where that is, haha... Our Pritchard family is from Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Neath Port Talbot, Wales, UK.
