Hello!
Pigg is a very old name, and John Pigg was an early immigrant to America from England. Some claim the name was originally French. I have not researched the name farther back than the immigrant, but I welcome information from global Piggs. I hope to learn more about people with this surname, including from the people of color, and native ancestry.

I hear a few snickers.... Some people born with this surname have changed their name, while others have given their children interesting names, as Ima Pigg, John A. Pigg, Harry Pigg, and Icy Pigg. People with this surname usually develop a sense of humor, and the ability to look people in the eye when they give their name.

I have had a devilish time researching my Pigg line. My family did not fill out their paperwork correctly, they lived with relatives, and they sometimes used their middle names. The only thing I am sure of is my great-grandfather, John A. Pigg, died 1907, Cherokee Co., Kansas. Over the last many years I have built up a large database of Pigg, by following lines in hope they were mine. I have also pursued Pegg and Piggott. I will help any Pigg researchers if I can, and I hope someone has information that can help me in my research. I am not sure the following lineage is correct. It seems the most probable line of descent. I welcome any discussion!

1. John A. Pigg (1862/65 MO? - 1907 KS); m. 1884, Cherokee Co., KS, to Sarah A.F. Williams, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Williams. He was a zinc miner. *MY GREAT-GRANDPARENTS.
1870 Indiana, Greene Co., Wright Twp, census head John Pigg
1880 Indiana, Sullivan Co., Cass Twp, census head William Pigg
1900 Kansas, Cherokee County

2. John Pigg (b.1823-1830 TN - d. maybe 1878 Sullivan Co., Indiana); m. 1. Ethalinda last name unknown; m 2. 1865, New Madrid Co., MO to Malinda Ward. He was a farmer.
1850 Census, Tennesse, Hardin County, 9th Civil District.
1860 Census, Missouri, Pemiscott County
1870 Census, Indiana, Greene Co., Wright Twp

(Rosemary - I have a question. I have information that John and Ethalinda were in Warren, not Hardin County, Tennessee in 1850. I am concerned about this.
The people above are the ones I am researching. Can you recheck to see which county please?) I have checked the info on Ancestry.com. Ethalinda & John Pigg were living in Hardin Co., TN during the 1850 Census.

Thank you! I have a copy of the 1850 TN census with John & Ethalinda Pigg. It is labeled Warren County, TN, and that is the way it was sent to me. Tonight I greatly increased the magnification, and sure enough it does say Hardin. I should have done that when I got the census image!!! I kick myself several times.. This makes a lot of difference in how I view this family, since the two oldest females were born in Alabama. Alabama was across the county line, not half way across the state. This probably makes John Pigg kin to other Pigg families who lived in New Madrid and Pemiscot Co., Missouri after he lived there in 1860, and it probably means he does not belong in certain families where other researchers have put him.
I now have the free version of Heritage Quest, which omits 1830, 1840, and 1850 census images, although I had Ancestry.com in the distant past. I guess it is time to get Ancestry.com again for a few months, although some of the Pigg were erroneously labeled Pegg in the past causing much grief to researchers.
Thank you again!!
I read the 1850 Hardin County, Tennessee Census as Larena (sic, Sirena) Pigg age 7, as age 2, which makes more sense. Also Etha Pigg was age 21 in 1850, and age 28 in 1860. This makes me think something is off here, and maybe their age is given as approximates. Mary Pigg is not on the 1860 census with her parents, but that does not necessarily mean she is deceased. She may have been living with relatives, or married at a young age. John Pigg married a much younger woman in 1865, but I have not found Ethalinda's grave. She either died or they divorced? Every census of this line of Pigg has off information until into the 1900's.

I recognize the Pigg census heads included by Judy Week, but I do not understand the Enrica Jones census. William Pigg is probably the father of Martha Jones, born 1800, NC, but I do not recognize Martha Pigg, born 1810, Virginia. I doubt William had two daughters named Martha, and I equally doubt William had a wife that young, but that is possible. If the Martha born 1810 is his daughter, then who is Enrica and Martha Jones?

I have another problem with the Enrica Jones 1850 census. It does not fit with information I have seen concerning the elderly William Pigg of Warren County, Tennessee. Is this the same William Pigg who previously resided in Surry County, North Carolina? I am going to have to check dates on documents I have.

The John Pigg I am researching is said to be the grandson of William Pigg, but I have seen no proof this is true.
Researchers have placed the John Pigg I am researching as a son of Clayborn and Lucinda (Womack) Pigg.
Claborn (Clayborn) is in the 1810 census, Surry County, North Carolina. He is placed as a son of William Pigg, who resided in neighboring Wilkes County. This Clayborn would have been born mid 1790's in North Carolina.
I have problems after this point.
Claiborne Pigg is in the 1820, Smith County, Tennessee census, and the 1830 Greene County, Indiana census with James Pigg. There are court documents of Clayborn and James Pigg together in Tennessee. After about 1837, Clayborn disappears. Lucinda remarries before 1840. No marriage of Lucinda Womack and Clayborn Pigg is found. No death of Clayborn is found. An early Tennessee newspaper announced Lucinda Womack married John Pigg. Womack research lists Lucinda as marrying John Pigg. Pigg research says she married Clayborn Pigg.
This disagreement gets worse.
John Pigg, born 1823-1830 in Tennessee, supposed son of Clayborn and Lucinda, is in the 1870 census of Greene County, Indiana, with a wife named Malinda, living next-door to Robert Pigg, his supposed brother. I cannot find him after this date. In 1865, John Pigg married Malinda in New Madrid, Missouri. In 1860, he is in Pemiscot County, Missouri married to Etha. In 1850, he is in Hardin County, Tennessee married to Ethalinda, supposed same person as Etha. Paul and Charlotte Pigg resided in the same county. In the adjacent county of Wayne, TN, resided Claborn Pigg, age 91, married to Fanny. This would be the Claborn Pigg who married Ann (Fanny?) Holder in 1830. This Clayborn Pigg cannot be the same person who married Lucinda Womack because there were Pigg children born to Lucinda after 1830. Oddly, both John Pigg and descendants of the Clayborn Pigg of Wayne County later moved to Pemiscot County, Missouri. One would think they might be related in some way. I went through this explanation to point out there were at least two men named Clayborn Pigg.

There were many men named John Pigg. In 1870, Greene County, Indiana resided a man named John A. Pigg/Pegg, born c1790, in North Carolina who was living with his son, William. This John also had lived in Tennessee before Indiana. The John Pigg I have been researching also lived in Greene County, Indiana in 1870, and he had a son named John A. Pigg. It is tempting to say that John A Pigg, born 1790, is the father of John Pigg born 1823-1830. This may not be so. There is a biography of John A. Pigg. He does not appear to have married Lucinda Womack, although he did have a son named John of approximately the same age as the John I am researching. John Pigg, born 1790, does not exist in any Pigg research I have seen. I have found some information on this man and his family, but no relationship to the other Pigg in the area.
And just when you thought this research problem could get no worse...it does.
In the 1880 census, Sullivan County, Indiana, John Pigg age 18 was a farm hand living with an ill William Pigg, age 24, and his wife, Sarah. John said he was born in Missouri, his father in Tennessee, and his mother in Missouri. This is probably the orphaned son of the John I was researching. His step-mother was born in Missouri. There is no relationship given between William and John. This John appears to be the same person as the John Pigg who married in Kansas in 1884, because a number of related people from Sullivan, Indiana moved to the same area in Kansas shortly after 1880. John never said the same thing twice on his census, and he left few informative documents.
The above information may not be correct, and I hope anyone with information would make a comment. The above is my best guess on this Pigg line. It is the results of sorting through information on every John Pigg family I could find for a long time, which is how I came to know information on other Pigg lines. Any suggestions?
