Sir John Bisset, (1777- 1854) born and died in Perth, was Commissary-General to the forces, serving with the Duke of wellington in the Peninsular War.

Little has ben written about his family life. This is how Gentleman's Magazine of May 1854 recorded his death: Died 3rd April 1854 in Perth, Scotland "Sir John Bisset, KCH, KCB. He held the office of Commisary of the Forces under the Duke of Wellington during the whole of the Peninsular war and was appointed Commissary-General in 1811. He was knighted in 1832 and nominated KCB in 1850. By his death a pension of 550l has reverted to the crown. Sir John was a native of Perth, and he resided there for many years past." -

Sir John was an executor of the will of one Thomas Willan whose life I am also trying to untangle. I am keen to learn more about Sir John Bisset, and his relationship to Thomas Willan. One of Willan's grandchildren was named Rev Charles Bisset Douglas-Willan, so I feel there must be some connection. Another of the exectors was Robert Douglas of Woolwich Warren a Lieutenant General in his Majesty's Regiment of Royal Artillery. He was father-in-law to Thomas Willan's daughter, Isabella.

Can anyone help identfy John Bisset, of Perth?

My connection with Perthshire (apart from living in Perth, Western Australia) is my great great great parents, Charles Fraser born Blair Atholl 1793 and Charlotte Anderson McKay. They lived in Aberfeldy and had 6 children, James, Christian (my great great grandmother), Ann, Catherine, Janet and Charles. Christian married (? can't find a record of a marriage) John Gow and they had a son, Daniel who was my great grandfather. I visited Perth and Aberfeldy when I was in Scotland for The Gathering in July this year.

It is well documented that George, 2nd earl of Dumbarton died without heirs, and the earldom came to an end in 1748/49.

However, these is a theory that he was sometime commander of troops at The Barracks, nr kinloch Rannoch, and fathered a child whilst there. This child took the name Barrack (or was given it to hide his father's identity) and somehow moved to Aberdeenshire.

He subsequently married a Barbara Watt and lived near Ellon, in Aberdeenshire. They had a son Alexander Scarlett Barrack, who was born in Ellon in Aberdeenshire. Alexander went to Australia and captained ships in the South Pacific for 35 years , and later settled in Fiji.

Can anyone throw light on this story?
