My connection with the Traffords, is that I descend from Rebecca Trafford, daughter of Thomas Trafford and Sarah Hall, she was listed as a baker at Kirtlington at her marriage. She ended up coming to Australia with husband John Heath... which is where I presently live.

My turn...

My connection is rather evident by my surname. My great grandparents, Walter John Trafford of Oxford and Eliza (Shirley) of Woodstock immigrated to Canada in 1907 with their 7 children. Walter John's father John had been born in Kirtlington, where he shows up in the 1841 Kirtlington census with his parents and siblings, and his 74-year-old grandfather, Thomas Trafford (1767-1843) - "Baker". This Thomas turns out to have been the brother of Phil's Ann. So from that point back is where our ancestries are shared - and I have been able to borrow heavily from Phil's research, which extends back to Adderbury in the early 1600's.

I have been rather successful in studying a number of clusters of the Trafford (and de Trafford) family name, going back as early as the 13th century; all within a few scant miles of the Adderbury/Banbury area. It is a fairly safe bet that our surname comes from the medieval village of Trafford, Northamptonshire (not the more famed one near Manchester). This village was abandoned around the 14/1500's, but its ruins stand only 8 miles from Banbury. I have collected dozens of records - the earliest one being of Johannes (John) de Trafford, who held half a knight's fee in Trafford (Nhants) in the year 1284. I discuss many of these records in stories that I have posted on my family history website.

Perhaps I should start by explaining my connection to the Trafford name. One of my 3G grandmothers was Ann Harper née Trafford (1784-1869) daughter of John Trafford of Kirtlington, Oxfordshire and his wife Mary (née Curtis).
This particular family line interested me more than others for several reasons: there was a wealth of fascinating information on Ann's granfather in the Dashwood family papers at the ORO; they feature in the wonderful 1750 survey of the village; their migration from Adderbury to Kirtlington via Wendlebury was fun to track down; lots of wills; and more - I learnt a lot about research while tracking down this family.

Not much action yet - perhaps I can encourage a few of my Trafford contacts to join up.
