I have family in canada west all the way back to 1845.

Peter Smith came from England and married misss sawyer 3 Mar 1845 in Huron Districct.

He appears in the 1871 cencus as a widower but there is a discrepancy in the forename of Miss sawyer. many trees and records show her as Eliza Sawyer and others show her as Louisa sawyer. Trying to find which is correct. any help appreciated.

in the 1861 census she's listed as ELISIA and in 1851 as LOUISE but marriage says ELIZA very confusing

Yeah I see that

Do you know their death-dates?

Peter died in North Dorchester, Middlesex County - he was a Methodist, informant was Aaron Smith, "Farmer, North Dorchester."  Peter had heart disease.

Name: Peter Smith
Death Date: 3 Nov 1890
Death County or District: Middlesex
Age: 66
Gender: Male
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824
Birth Location: England

This adds MORE confusion - when Aaron got married in 1883 - parents listed as Peter and LAURA Smith, but looks to be him by age and location.

OK and when Julia Ann Smith (born 1864 or 1865 - sahe is in 1881 census) got married in 1895 her parents are listed as Peter SMITH and Louisa SAWYER

Youngest son, Thomas, 15 in 1881, drowned at age 22

I think she died 1867 or 1868 - otherwise she'd be in death records (not there) 1869 on....

i have Peter's death as 3 Nov 1890 but for Louisa (Eliza) I do not have a date but i know that it was between 11 July 1867 (DOB of youngest child) and 2 Apr 1871 (date of 1871 census showing Peter as a widower)

Marriage record:  written as Eliza with an X next to it [her mark?]  Peter same way

Name: Peter Smith
Spouse Name: Eliza Sawyer
Marriage Date: 3 Mar 1845
Marriage Location: Canada
Marriage County or District: Huron
