Comment by John Hale on May 11, 2012 at 6:16pm Update on my research of my Hale line.
A before unknown cousin was located who is the great granddaughter of Henry Hale a brother to John Hale, my great grandfather. She stated that her mother (Mary Quinn) always told her and her brother they were not really Hale. They were AKERS. Her mother told them an Aker was adopted either by Henry Hale or his father John Hale, my great great grandfather.
Would any one know of any Acker/Aker/Akers that was taken in by a Hale family? Thanks for any help.
John Hale
Comment by Roberta Baum on January 30, 2012 at 7:47pm Hello, Lou: I am quite familiar with the northern pandle of WV since I grew up there. My cousins grew up there, too. My cousin's husband is recovering from having a pacemaker put in so it may be a while before I can answer you about William Reese. Roberta

Comment by Debra Reese on January 20, 2012 at 4:38pm Thanks Roberta, The northern panhandle of West Va /PA is exactly where I am referring to and then on both sides of the Ohio river southward to Parkersburg W Va (across the river from Ohio). And across the state lines of Ohio/W Va where the river serves as the state line. So Sorry for the confusion I caused you, perhaps this research area will make more sense to a Reece surname researcher. I understand Reese is not your family line of interest and thank you for referring me to your cousin. But for those readers here who do have Reese/Reece relations I hope they will read over my info here and respond if they have any detail at all. Many Reeces/Reeses were concentrated in these areas of which I speak. I just looked it up in Google maps and the area you are speaking of is the same as where I am looking at as well as both sides of the river starting at Youngstown Ohio which is almost at the PA state line. Then going south from Youngstown south in W Va to Parkersburg W Va. Thanks for referring me to your cousin. Hopefully I will make some Reese/Reece connections with some info! Thanks a million Roberta, Deb
Comment by Roberta Baum on January 20, 2012 at 9:11am Deb: I said "northern panhandle of WV", not Ohio. The Ohio River is on one side and PA on the other. I will write to my cousin and find out what I can. Roberta
Comment by Debra Reese on January 19, 2012 at 3:44pm To Roberta Baum or others. . . here is my interest in the area.
I'm not sure what you mean by panhandle of Ohio state. Specifically I speak of the areas of the area of far north eastern Ohio -Youngstown, Ohio and south, downward to Parkersburg W Va and in-between. Specifically with individuals(mystery people) buried on opposite sides of the Ohio river in Ohio and W Va. specifically mentioned in an old family account are "my now brickwalls" and are the only clues as evidence of these paternal grandfathers. My 4th GGrandfather was a William Reese and he and who his father was are my mystery people and brick walls yet unverified. To quote from my family account:
According to family members, "Henry's Father William is said to have died by a log falling on him while building a log home. After which his wife (whose name was not remembered in the account) took then young 4yr old Henry Reece and they went back eastward to her family in or around Youngstown in Ohio. It came about when William Reece and wife had left Youngstown, Ohio abt 1808-1810 to go south to Reece family in Parkersburg, W Va (basically along the Ohio River border of Ohio and W Va) but decided to stop along the way and build a log cabin in the vicinity of the upper eastern end of Washington County, Ohio. This is when the death of William occured. And area ancestors of Edward Sheets of Marritta in Wash. County Ohio, remembers that in the same area, the body of William Reece was taken by some of his Sheets ancestors and buried in a Sheet's family plot just across from the mouth of Cow Creek. The ancestors of an Sheets Family of the area who also lived at the time in Washington County Ohio across the mouth of cow creek, and they took William Reece's body and buried him in their private burial plot on the Ohio side of the river. So then William Reece's widow took their son Henry and "went back to her people".
To get a perspective of the lineage leading to this brick wall mystery person of mine, here is the lineage beginning with: an unknown Mystery 4th G Grandfather ____ Reece who had:
William Reese b. abt 1775 Ohio or Parkersburg,West Virginia, USA ?Wood County
>his son Henry Reece b. abt 1810 Parkersburg, W. Virginia, USA Wood County
>his son William Lewis Reece b. abt 1833 Parkersburg, W. Virginia, USA Wood County
>his son (my Grandfather)Joseph Gideon Reese b. abt 1885 Parkersburg, W. Virginia, USA
It should be duly noted here that: It is apparent just by reviewing most Reece/Reese family trees and doing relative searches that many who have William Lewis Reese and his father Henry Reese in their family line are stumped at this juncture concerning Henry's father and grandfather William! Most everyone’s family tree stops with ‘Henry's father believed to have been named William” with no sources to verify him or who his father was.
For all of us who share these Grandparents – I know a bunch of us have been shaking our heads for all the brick walls we have encountered at every turn concerning these Grandparents!
Let me know if you are in the same boat with me - I would like to hear from you. Maybe together we can solve this. If you have this already sorted and sourced out, I definitely would sure like to hear from you!
