Any information on the Tantons greatfully received - I have already recieved a great deal of help from Mr Cooke in Canada. My e,mail is janet@few4.orangehome.co.uk

I have quite a bit of info on the Tanton family of London Ontario from St. Giles in the Wood.  They are related to my Pengilly family, originally from Clovelly, but moved to Yarnscombe.

My gg grandmother was Susan Tanton from St Giles in the Wood.  She was born in 1843 and died in 1933 in Toronto.  I have pictures of her and her family if you are interested.

Before the Yeos it was the Burnard and Chanter families but as you say, not everyone was associated

Not this Robert...William Ellis (well known shipbuilder of PEI) was associated with the Yeo family, but my Robert is William Ellis's 1c1r and was not connected with William's business or Yeo. for that matter.

My Robert Ellis was connected with the Peacock Inn in Bideford. I believe he was the brother of William Ellis who ran the Peacock.

Robert Ellis is likely to have been associated with the Yeo family who had shipbuilding yards in both Bideford and PEI. Many people crossed the Atlantic not intending to emigrate permanently but later went to stay.

My ancestor Robert Ellis emigrated to PEI Canada in 1819...then again in 1840. He was from Bideford.

Hi Janet,

Thanks for the URLs. I don't think I've been to either site, so I will have a look.

Regards,

Nancy
