Am researching the Joseph Forsyth & Lucinda Hastings Forsyth family.

Joseph is my maternal 3rd great grandfather. As a boy, he immigrated to Cornwall, Quebec, Canada circa 1850 with his parents who left him in Canada apprenticed to a printer.  The Robert Forsyths then proceeded to the US and settled in St. Lawrence County, NY. Joseph eventually ran away and found his parents. He, too, settled in the County where he married.  I am very interested in the Joseph Forsyths’ subsequent migration from St. Lawrence County, NY to Pierce County, NE. in 1879. Currently, I’m working on an independent study project for an undergraduate history degree involving the effect of family migrations upon the women and children during the 1880s through 1920s—both those who migrated and those who were left behind. Since I’ve been a family genealogist for many years, I will be basing my study upon my Forsyth family and then broadening the scope of the research to other families.

If anyone has first-person accounts of North Country women and/or children living at that time in the form of letters, diaries, journals, etc.and would be willing to share them with me, I would be most appreciative.

Hello! I'm doing research on my husband's family who are connected to the St. Lawrence County region of New York. Some of the surnames are McIntosh, Hogue, Jock, and Monroe.

Sorry, that should have said "many hits for Veeders," not "for the Veeders," as I am not sure all of them are "my" Veeders.

Hi Kurt,
Thank you so much for that link! I had not explored that website before. I've found many hits for the Veeders including one that answered some questions of mine (one of Robert's siblings married a woman whose origins I had not yet traced, and the article mentioned her parents, her siblings and where the other siblings that had moved away [as she and her husband did] were living at the time it was published). I've scanned the other hits and it looks like there may be more information for me to mine on the site as well.

I'm also looking forward to exploring searches for the elusive Mercena!

Hi Liz. Are you familiar with the Northern NY Newspaper Archive site? It has historical newspapers from Oswego along with the other northern tier counties. It is at http://news.nnyln.net/

My families hail from Jefferson and St Lawrence counties, though I did have one family in Oswego county prior to the War of 1812 (they moved to Jefferson county).

Hello,
Thank you for starting this group. I've long wondered why there wasn't a general New York group on here, as my families in NY tended to migrate to a new area of the state every few generations (or less, earlier on).
Anyhow, a branch of my family lived in Oswego County for a while. My direct line left but as far as I yet know, some of their siblings and cousins stayed behind. My direct line is Robert Veeder and Mercena Dansford. Robert's family had been in the Colonies since it was New Netherland but Mercena's a brick wall so far. Some of Robert's many siblings also left Oswego for the Midwest as Robert did, but others stayed in Oswego County.

There must be others doing research in the far north counties of New York! My family comes from the area around Antwerp in Jefferson County and Gouverneur in St. Lawrence County. I would love to hear from others who are researching in the area--good resources, brick walls, all the rest.
