My Nave ancestors hailed from East Tennessee (and, as we know, farther back all the way to Switzerland). But Tennessee became their stomping grounds, and for my line, also Indiana.

John T. B. Nave was my great-great grandfather, and his son Teter "Tete" Nave was my great-grandfather. Teter Nave was born in Tennessee and died in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, in 1909. From all I have been able to gather so far, Teter Nave and his wife Elizabeth "Lizzie" Taylor had only one child, a daughter named Ruth, who was my grandmother.

Elizabeth Taylor Nave was born in Tennessee also. She married Teter Nave in Carter County, Tennessee, in 1879. (I'm posting this away from home today, so I don't have all my information handy). She died sometime after 1930.

Ruth Nave was born in 1892 (exact date unknown so far) in South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana. She was a telephone operator, going to work to support her widowed mother. On 25 November 1913, she married my grandfather Benjamin Frankllin "Frank" Reed in South Bend.

I have copies of their marriage license applications, license, and the marriage certificate. God Bless Indiana -- they collected a LOT of information in those days, including parents' names (with mother's maiden name), parents' occupations, and a whole lot more.

My Nave/Naves ancestors are a bit of a mystery. My earliest Naves (they used the names Nave and Naves interchangably) is Thomas Naves (b. 1823 somewhere in Kentucky; d. 5 Jun 1866 Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky) He shows up in the 1850 census in Louisville, KY and then again in 1860. In 1850 he was a steward on a steamboat. In 1860 he was a cook on a steamboat and this fact is echoed by the mortuary record. His wife was Mary ROSE (b. 1829 Kentucky, d. 24 Mar 1894) They had 11 children:
Frances Nave
George WW Nave
William T Nave
James J Nave
Jacob Nave
Charles Nave
Sarah Nave
Absolom A Nave
Francis Jefferson Nave
Jefferson D. Nave
James Edward Nave

I have been wondering if perhaps Thomas Naves is from one of the Tennessee Naves who may have settled in KY. So far I have not found any "likely suspects."

James Edward Nave married Josephine Keegan and had one daughter, orphaned young. She was Mary Agnes Nave. She was my great grandmother. She left the family (there are a couple different versions of the story) when my grandmother was only 6 and she never came back. I have copies of two letters she sent to her husband. In them she was working for a hotel owner in and his wife as a domestic in Indianapolis IN. I am trying to trace what happened to her in later years.
